It is more than clear today that there is no longer interest in small compact phones. After all, Apple knows about it. In 2020, with the arrival of the iPhone 12 mini, it tried to target a group of users who have been calling for the return of compact smartphones for a long time. At first glance, everyone was blown away by the phone. After years, we finally got an iPhone in compact dimensions and without major compromises. Simply everything that the iPhone 12 offered, the iPhone 12 mini also offered. But as it soon became clear, enthusiasm is not all you need from a new model. There was simply no interest in the phone and its sales were even lower than the giant had even anticipated.

A year later, we saw the arrival of the iPhone 13 mini, i.e. a direct continuation, which was based on the same principle. Again, it was a full-fledged device, only with a smaller screen. But even then it was more or less clear that the mini series was unfortunately not going anywhere and it was time to end this attempt. That's exactly what happened this year. When Apple revealed the new iPhone 14 series, instead of the mini model, it came with the iPhone 14 Plus, i.e. the direct opposite. Although it is again a basic model, it is now available in a larger body. His popularity but let's leave it aside for now.
iPhone SE as the last compact model
So if you are among the fans of compact phones, then you have only one option left from the current offer. If we ignore the iPhone 13 mini, which is still sold, then the only choice is the iPhone SE. It does offer a powerful Apple A15 chipset, which beats, for example, in the new iPhone 14 (Plus), but otherwise it still relies on the body of the iPhone 8 with Touch ID, which puts it in the position of the smallest/most compact iPhone currently. And that is why some Apple fans were greatly surprised by the speculation about the expected iPhone SE 4. Although we will have to wait for this model some Friday, there are already rumors that Apple could use the design of the popular iPhone XR and definitely remove the home button with the Touch ID fingerprint reader. Even then, we probably won't see the transition to Face ID - Touch ID will only move to the power button, following the example of the iPad Air and iPad mini.

Speculations regarding a design change, according to which the expected iPhone SE 4th generation should have a 6,1″ screen, have unpleasantly surprised the aforementioned fans of compact phones. But it is necessary to put the situation into perspective. The iPhone SE is not a compact phone and Apple never even presented it that way. On the contrary, it is a so-called entry model, which is available at a significantly lower price compared to the flagships. That is why it is nonsense to expect that this cheap iPhone will retain its smaller dimensions in the future. Unfortunately, it got the label of a compact phone more or less naturally, when you only need to compare the current models with the iPhone SE, from which this idea clearly follows. In addition, if the mentioned speculations about the new design are true, then Apple is sending a fairly clear message - there is no longer a place for compact phones.
The 13mini is smaller than the SE 3rd…
Yes, it doesn't have tough id and a home button, but if you want the smallest phone, then 13mini (plus you get a bigger display, better camera, longer battery life...)
I understand that there are few people who want a compact phone. But they could make a small phone maybe once every 3-4 years…. The annual replacement of equipment is unnecessary, but in this way the demand could be concentrated on maybe 20% of the series and that could already make sense for the manufacturer...

It's a shame that the iPhone 13 Mini was the last.
I returned to Apple years later and bought the iPhone 13 mini for one simple reason, the size of the hw and durability.
I simply stopped enjoying the 6" and more cases, I switched from the Realme 8, but the 6.4" is already on the edge and it's practically impossible to do with one hand.
13 mini has nice dimensions, control of all functions with one hand and 140g I don't even feel it in my pocket.
Movies or games, except for a few logical ones, do not run on the phone, and everything else, at least for me, this is ideal
