Recently, information regarding the launch of Apple Pay in the Czech Republic has been increasing considerably. The main reason is the approaching launch of the service and also the fact that banking institutions are a bit more cooperative. For example, last week, on the official website of MONETA Money Bank, we discovered a page hidden for the public with information on how to set up the service, and subsequently, in the conditions, also its possible launch on the domestic market. Now Komerční banka is coming with its own twist, which has confirmed that it plans to launch Apple Pay at the beginning of next year.

Komerční banka informed the media today that its mobile banking is already used by a third of all clients, namely 600. KB owes this primarily to innovative technologies, when it implemented, for example, Face ID, a connection to a smart watch or the ability to approve payments with a fingerprint and face into its application. On that occasion, the bank confirmed that it also plans to launch Apple Pay soon. Specifically, this will happen already at the beginning of next year.

Excerpt from the press release where Komerční banka mentions plans for Apple Pay:

Komerční banka is the first bank in the Czech Republic that allows you to authorize payment transactions with just your fingerprint when controlling your account via mobile phone. This significantly speeds up and simplifies the approval of payments, while increasing security. As one of the first banks in the Czech Republic, KB introduced the option of paying merchants via mobile phone. At the beginning of next year, Komerční banka plans to launch payments via Apple phones - Apple Pay. Furthermore, it was the first to display ATMs of foreign banks in its application (currently Air bank and others are being prepared) and even enabled clients to upload their ID card through the mobile application and save them a trip to the branch.

Already during October in the corridors was heard, that it will be possible to pay using Apple Pay for the first time in our region at the turn of January and February. A more specific date was then revealed by the conditions for the service that we discovered on the Moneta website, which came into effect on February 1, 2. Following our article, other banks also began to reveal their plans regarding Apple Pay support, in response to questions from our readers. For example, ČSOB let it be known that it has also confirmed the arrival of Apple Pay in the Czech Republic and that it wants to offer payment in this way to its clients in the first quarter of 2019.

So it seems that the service's entry into our market is already really close. We will probably be able to pay with iPhone and Apple Watch already in the first months of next year. Basically, all stores that have a contactless payment terminal should have Apple Pay. However, it is also expected that the service will be implemented by Czech e-shops, when we will be able to use it on a Mac with just one click and placing a finger on Touch ID.
