You can find countless debates on the Internet about whether Android devices are better or iPhones with Apple's iOS. But the truth is that every operating system, and therefore every device, has something in it. It is up to you whether you expect freedom and a large number of adjustments in the system, or whether you will swim into the closed ecosystem of Apple, which will literally swallow you up. In my opinion, however, there is one thing that Android users envy Apple users. Let's take a look at it together and please let me know in the comments if you share my opinion or not.

Android vs iOS

I would never dare to claim that Android or iOS is simply better than the competing system. Android can boast of some functions and things, some behind iOS. But when you buy a smartphone from a manufacturer, you kind of expect it to be supported for several long years. When you compare, for example, support from Samsung with support from Apple, you will find that there is a vast difference between the approach of both companies. While for devices from Samsung you will receive support from the manufacturer for two or three years, in the case of iPhones from Apple this period is set for 5 years or more, which is based on approximately four generations of iPhones.

Device support from Apple

If we look at the whole situation more closely, you will find that, for example, the iOS 13 operating system released less than a year ago supports five-year-old iPhones, namely the 6s and 6s Plus models, or the iPhone SE from 2016. iOS 12, which was released almost two years ago, after that you can install without problems on iPhone 5s, which is a seven year old device (2013). This year we have already seen the introduction of iOS 14 and many users expected that there will be another omission of the supported generation, and that you will install the new operating system only on iPhone 7 and later. However, the opposite is true, as Apple has decided that you will install iOS 14 on the same devices as last year's iOS 13. So logically, you will not install the new and upcoming iOS 14 on an even older device, but they will still be available on the iPhone 6s (Plus), and until the release of iOS 15, which we will see in a year and a few months. If we translate that into years, you'll find that Apple will fully support a device that will be a full 6 years old - something Android users can only dream of.

Samsung device support

As for support for Android devices, it's nowhere near that great - and it should be noted that it never was. Samsung and five-year device support is simply out of the question. To set the record straight in this case too, we can look at the Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone, which was introduced in the same year as the iPhone 6s. The Galaxy S6 came pre-installed with Android 5.0 Lollipop, the iPhone 6s then with iOS 9. It should be noted that Android 5.0 Lollipop had been available for some time when the Galaxy S6 was released, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow was released that same year. However, the Galaxy S6 did not receive support for the new Android 6.0 until half a year later, specifically in February 2016. You could install the new iOS 6 on the iPhone 10s (Plus), as is customary until now, immediately after the official release of the system, i.e. in September 2016. While you could always update the iPhone 6s (and all others) to a new version of iOS immediately on the day of release, the Samsung Galaxy S6 received the next version of Android 7.0 Nougat, which was released in August 2016, only 8 months later, in March 2017.

Updates are available from Apple immediately, there is no need to wait several months

By this, we simply mean that the iOS operating system is available for all supported devices immediately on the day of the official presentation, and Apple fans simply do not have to wait for anything. In addition, we will tell you that the Galaxy S6 has not yet received the next version of Android 8.0 Oreo and the last version you will install on it is the already mentioned Android 7.0 Nougat, while the iPhone 6s received the iOS 8.0 operating system a month after the release of Android 11 Oreo. Necessary note that the iPhone 11s also received the iOS 5 operating system, which is a device that was released alongside the Samsung Galaxy S4. As for the Galaxy S4, it came with Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and you could only update it to Android 5.0.1, which was released in 2014, and only in January 2015. Time went on after that and the iPhone 5s was it is still possible to install the latest available version of iOS 2018 in 12. For comparison, it can be mentioned that the possibility of installing iOS 14 on the iPhone 6s would represent the possibility of installing Android 11 on the Galaxy S6.

Explanations or excuses?

There are, of course, various explanations for why Android devices simply do not receive updates for several long years. This is more or less mainly due to the fact that Apple owns all devices with the iOS operating system and at the same time can program the version for all of its iPhones several long months in advance. If we look at the Android operating system, it runs on practically all smartphones, except for the iPhone. This means that, for example, Samsung or Huawei simply have to rely on Google. It works very similarly in the case of macOS and Windows, where macOS is designed for only a few dozen configurations, while Windows has to run on millions of configurations. Another factor is the number of different devices that Apple owns compared to Samsung. Samsung produces low-end, mid-range and high-end phones, so its portfolio is much larger. On the other hand, I think that it shouldn't be a problem for Samsung to somehow agree with Google that new versions of Android are made available to it some time before the release, so that it has time to completely adapt them to all its devices, or at least to its flagships.

Freedom nausea, support is more important

Despite the fact that Android users can enjoy a freer environment and options for complete system modification, the fact that device support is really important does not change. The lack of support for older devices is also often caused by the laziness of the companies that make smartphones - just look at Google, which both "owns" Android and makes its own Pixel phones. Support for these devices should logically be the same as for Apple, but the opposite is true. You simply won't be able to install Android 2016 on a 11 Google Pixel anymore, while iOS 15 will be able to be installed on the 7 iPhone 2016 next year, and quite possibly there will be an option to update to iOS 16. So, in this case, laziness plays a major role. Many people criticize Apple for the price tags of its devices, but if you look at the latest flagships from Apple, you will find that their price is very similar. I can't imagine that I would buy a flagship from Samsung for 30 thousand (or more) crowns and have "guaranteed" support for the latest operating system for only two years, after which I would have to buy another device. Apple's iPhone will easily last you at least five (or more) years after purchase.
