After an extremely long wait, the ice was finally broken. From Monday, June 14, the first Czech operator will start offering LTE in Apple watches. Many have been holding off on buying an Apple Watch until official support arrives precisely because of the lack of LTE, and now they are finally rejoicing. But is it necessary to get a new model precisely because of the deployment of new technology?

Modernization is what we needed

Although the wait was not entirely short, the largest Czech operator T-Mobile took a significant step forward. The technology that Apple uses for mobile connections is quite different from the classic one. In particular, the same phone number must be registered in the same network on two products, so you cannot have a different SIM card in the watch than in the phone. Personally, I wouldn't worry about Vodafone and O2 not swinging to support, if only because they also need to attract customers. But how many will there actually be?

Although all three telecommunications networks undoubtedly had the funds to deploy the new technologies, adding support was not entirely easy, especially given the financial demands and the group of users who would purchase a watch with a cellular connection. You can make phone calls from your wrist, listen to music or podcasts with connected Bluetooth headphones, without the need to have downloaded content in your watch. Because of this, you also have to expect a decrease in the watch's battery life.

They are great for a short run or a trip to the pub

I would really hate to say that LTE in a watch is a complete waste. Personally, I can imagine that with the Apple Watch on my wrist, I would run for an hour in nature, go out for an afternoon coffee with friends, or perhaps go to work in a nearby cafe with WiFi. But whether you go to the office for the whole day, travel often or spend a student day at school, you will simply not appreciate this connectivity.

Precisely because of the battery life, which a watch with LTE will not provide you with for an all-day trip. Since it is not possible to upload a different number to the Apple Watch than you have on your smartphone, the possibility of giving it to your child is practically eliminated, unless you have an old iPhone.

Also expect that the service will not be free. Of course, our operators shouldn't set prices too high, but even so, it's another tariff that could discourage potential buyers. If you often do sports, it is certainly nice that anyone can call you without having a "big" phone with you, for people who are busy with time, or on the contrary, those who use the Apple Watch more as a "notifier and communicator", buy a watch with LTE almost not worth it. We'll see what Apple brings us in the coming months and years, and I hope we'll move forward in this area.
