Samsung, Huawei, Motorola - at least this trio of big players in the field of mobile phones already have their touch foldable smartphones. They bend to the sides like a book, but also like the once popular "clamshell" construction of mobile phones. But will we ever see a solution from Apple, or will the company successfully ignore this line?

The market is not expanding in any way yet. Samsung offers the most models, in the form of its Z Flip and Z Fold. The prices are of course set higher, but not dizzyingly compared to the usual competition. You can even get the Motorola Razr from CZK 19, Samsung models from CZK 27. In addition, this South Korean company is now preparing big news.

The Galaxy Unpacked event is already planned for August 11, and according to the latest information leaks, the company should present not only smart watches and TWS headphones, but also a pair of new generation Galaxy Z Flip and Galaxy Z Fold models. In the case of the latter, it will even be the 3rd generation. What does it mean? That Samsung already has a portfolio of products here, Apple has none.

Custom operating system

We still have a pandemic here, there are still problems with the production of chips, and logistics are still stuck. It cannot be assumed that Apple would introduce its first foldable phone together with the iPhone 13. For them, it would also mean certain competition and for Apple the cannibalization of its own market. But why not come up with a new model from next spring? This might seem like an ideal period. iPhone sales will be in full swing, and those who want it combined with an iPad will have the opportunity to jump on it. But there are a few buts.

The first is that we already know practically everything about the new iPhone 13. Not only how it will look, its cutout, but also what the layout of the cameras will be. But there hasn't been any mention of a foldable iPhone anywhere for a really long time. And it is highly unlikely that Apple would not manage to keep the iPhone 13 secret, but the foldable iPhone would.

The concept of a foldable iPhone:

The second is the operating system. Having iOS in it would probably be a wasted potential of the device. To have iPadOS in it would be a bit of a misnomer. But would we expect some foldOS? Could this system do something more than iOS and something less than iPadOS? If Apple solves its puzzle, it certainly also solves the form of the system and what such a device would bring to the user "extra".

Price will be an issue

Even if I have a big imagination, a similar device cannot currently offer more than just iPad functions (Apple Pencil, keyboard, cursor) in a slightly thicker iPhone body. And is it even necessary to have such a hybrid device on the market? I don't know the answer. I can't say that I wouldn't be curious about the final solution, on the other hand, I'm certainly not 100% the target girl. Moreover, if we imagine Apple's pricing policy, when its flagship iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at 34 CZK, such a machine would probably cost at least 45 CZK. And in that case, isn't it better to own two full-fledged devices than one hybrid?
