Almost a month has passed since the last apple conference. Many consider the most interesting presented product to be the AirTag location pendant, which is the cheapest device from Apple due to its affordable price, but at the same time, according to the Californian company, it can do a lot. According to of the SellCell Reseller Survey even 61% of people who own an iPhone and iPad plan to buy an AirTag. We have to take any surveys with a grain of salt, but due to the ongoing high demand, it cannot be expected that the seller would not be right with the data. But are AirTags really the products we need, or are we just being tricked by Apple?

No one has ever invented such a sophisticated system for a gadget

Let's pour some clear wine, Apple is far from the first company to offer pendants to help you find your keys, backpack or anything else. And to be honest, if the AirTag is within range of my iPhone, it doesn't offer much more than the competition. Yes, thanks to the U1 chip it is not necessary to play the sound, because the phone guides me to the product to within centimeters. If I still want to start the sound, I can ask the voice assistant Siri, although unfortunately this is not possible on the Apple Watch. But that's where the list of benefits ends. In addition, when you enter the competitive waters, you will find that some products several hundreds cheaper are able to notify you of disconnection, or even when someone has moved the pendant. Since the introduction of the Apple Watch, Apple users have been calling precisely for the notification about the loss of connection, so I personally do not understand why Apple did not add such a trivial function to AirTag at least. You probably think that I want to criticize AirTag with this text, but that is not the case.

Locator tags are great products only as long as you are within range of them. However, Apple wanted you to have at least some chance of finding your lost things even if your iPhone is out of reach of the locator - for this it uses the Find it network, which contains all iPhones, iPads and Macs from around the world. At the same time, you cannot track anyone with AirTag, because it recognizes that it is constantly connected to another owner's iPhone and will not show you its location. Even staunch opponents simply have to admit that such an elaborate solution is not easy to create. The Californian giant also benefits from the fact that there are more than enough iPhones, iPads and Macs around the world. So if you lose your AirTag somewhere in the city, a public building or in general a place where there is a large concentration of people, it is quite likely that you will find it. However, this cannot be said in a situation where your AirTag-equipped keys fall out in the forest or in the mountains.

Should we buy AirTags now?

I don't think the locator tag as we know it is the salvation we absolutely need to own. All the goodies are extremely useful, but we still have to reckon with the fact that, despite its reliability, Apple could push some features a little further. On the other hand, if a good soul finds a product with a pendant, which is quite likely in a busy city, the chances of it being returned to you are relatively high. However, I kind of hope that Apple will not rest on its laurels with AirTag and fine-tune certain things in terms of software. Either better cooperation with the Apple Watch or notifications when disconnecting from the phone would raise the usability of the product to an even higher level.
