If there's anything that's been particularly hotly debated lately, it's electricity prices. There have been increases in this area for many reasons, and many of you may be wondering how much it will cost to charge your iPhone, MacBook or AirPods annually. So let's roughly calculate these prices together.

Price calculation

When calculating the price of an annual charge, we will work with data on the latest products from Apple's workshop. We will therefore gradually insert the iPhone 14, AirPods Pro 2nd generation and 13″ MacBook Pro into the individual equations. Individual variants of Apple products naturally have different consumption, but this is nevertheless a relatively negligible difference. The formula for calculating the price for electricity consumption is quite simple. All we need to know is the consumption and the price per 1 kWh of energy. Subsequently, we will work with the time required to charge the given device. The calculation formula itself then looks as follows:

Power (W) x number of hours for which the device is connected to the network (h) = consumption in Wh

We convert the resulting number to kWh by dividing it by thousands, and then multiplying the consumption in kWh by the average price of electricity per kWh. According to the data available at the time of writing this article, it ranged from 4 CZK/kWh to 9,8 CZK/kWh. For the purposes of our calculation, we will use the price of CZK 6/kWh. For the sake of simplicity, we will not calculate the loss rate during the calculation. Of course, the actual consumption, or the cost of charging your devices, also depends on how often you charge these devices. So take our calculation as purely indicative.

Annual charging of the iPhone

At the beginning of the article, we said that to calculate the annual cost of charging an iPhone, we will count on the iPhone 14. It is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 3 mAh. If we charge this iPhone with a 279W or stronger adapter, we will reach 20% charge in about 50 minutes, according to Apple. Fast charging works up to 30%, after which it slows down and thus also reduces the power that the adapter delivers during charging. The time it takes to fully charge an iPhone also depends on the power of the adapter and other factors. For the purposes of our calculation, we will calculate with an approximate charging time of about 80 hours. If we substitute these numbers into the formula above, we find that charging an iPhone 1,5 for 1,5 hours will cost approximately CZK 14. If we work with the theory that we charge the iPhone once a day for the whole year, the price of its annual charging comes to roughly 0,18 CZK. We note that this is only an approximate calculation, as it was not possible to take into account absolutely all factors and parameters that affect charging. For simplicity, we also worked with a variant where the iPhone is only charged at home, all the time, and regardless of the possible alternation of a low and classic tariff.

Annual charging of the MacBook

Practically everything we noted about the price of an iPhone annual charge applies to calculating the cost of charging a MacBook annually. In the calculation, we will work with average data and the probability that you charge your MacBook once every day, for the whole year. We will work with data on a 13″ MacBook Pro, which is charged using a 67W USB-C adapter. Even in this case, it is not within our power to take into account absolutely all factors and parameters that can affect charging, so the result will again be purely indicative. According to available data, the MacBook Pro can be fully charged in about 2 hours and 15 minutes using the above adapter. A full charge will therefore roughly cost you around CZK 0,90. If you were to charge the MacBook only once a day under these conditions, without taking any other factors into account, and charge it every day for a whole year, the cost would be approximately CZK 330 per year.

Annual charging of AirPods

Finally, we will try to roughly calculate the average price for charging the latest AirPods Pro 2 for a year. We will work with the variant where we charge the headphones from the so-called "from zero to a hundred", using the classic way via the cable, while the headphones are placed in the charging box. To be sure, we remind you again that the calculation is only indicative and takes into account the variant where you charge the AirPods once a day for a whole year, and always from 0% to 100%. For the calculation, we will use the variant of charging with the help of a 5W adapter. According to available information, the AirPods Pro 2 will be fully charged in 30 minutes. One full charge will theoretically cost you 0,0015 CZK. Annual charging of AirPods Pro 2 will cost you approximately CZK 5,50.
