In iOS 5, Apple introduced an excellent tool for faster typing, where the system completes entire phrases or sentences after typing a certain text shortcut. This feature has also been present in OS X for a long time, although many people have no idea about it.

There are several applications for Mac that serve this purpose. Is part of them TextExpander or TypeIt4Me, which can add text quantities including formatting for you. However, if you don't want to pay for them and are satisfied with the limited options of shortcuts in the system, we will show you where to find them.

  • Open up System Preferences -> Language & Text -> bookmark Text.
  • In the list on the left, you will see a list of all the predefined shortcuts in the system. They must be ticked to be active Use symbol and text replacement.
  • To insert your own shortcut, press the small "+" button below the list.
  • First, write a text abbreviation in the field, for example "dd". Then press tab or double-click to switch to a secondary field.
  • Insert the required text into it, for example "Good day".
  • Press the Enter key and you have a shortcut created.
  • You activate the shortcut by typing it in any application and pressing the space bar. Unlike third-party applications, neither Tab nor Enter can activate the shortcut.

Shortcuts can make a lot of typing easier for you, especially frequently repeated phrases, email addresses, HTML tags, and the like.
