Apple will present the latest operating system of its iPhones already on June 5 as part of the opening Keynote at WWDC23. Subsequently, it will provide it as a beta version to developers and the general public, and a sharp version can then be expected probably in September. But when exactly? We looked into the history and will try to clarify it a little.

It is almost certain that during the opening Keynote, Apple will present its entire portfolio of new operating systems not only for iPhones, but also for iPads, Mac computers, Apple Watches and Apple TV smart boxes. It is then possible that we will see something new in the form of a system that will run its new product intended for AR/VR consumption. But iOS is what most users are interested in, because iPhones make up the largest base of Apple's hardware.

Usually within a few hours of the introduction of a new iOS, Apple releases it in the first beta version to developers. So it should happen during the said 5th of June. The public beta version of the new iOS then arrives in a few weeks. And what are we actually waiting for? Mainly a redesigned Control Center, a new diary app, updates to Find, Wallet and Health titles, while we're very curious to see what Apple will tell us about artificial intelligence.

iOS 17 release date

  • Developer beta version: June 5 after WWDC
  • Public beta version: Expected in late June or early July
  • iOS 17 public release: mid to late September 2023

The first iOS public beta typically arrives four to five weeks after the first developer beta launches in June. Historically, it was just between the end of June and the beginning of July.

  • First public beta of iOS 16: July 11, 2022
  • First public beta of iOS 15: June 30, 2021
  • First public beta of iOS 14: July 9, 2020
  • First public beta of iOS 13: June 24, 2019

Since Apple usually introduces iPhones during September, there's no reason to change that this year. It is true that we had a certain exception here during covid, but now everything should be the same as before. If we are based on recent years, we should see the sharp version of iOS 17 on September 11, 18 or 25, when the first date is most likely.

  • iOS 16: September 12, 2022 (after the September 7 event)
  • iOS 15: September 20, 2021 (after the September 14 event)
  • iOS 14: September 17, 2020 (after the September 15 event)
  • iOS 13: September 19, 2019 (after the September 10 event)
