Apple was fined 25 million euros in France this week. The reason is the deliberate slowing down of the iOS operating system on older iPhone models - or rather, the fact that the company did not sufficiently inform users about this slowdown.

The fine was preceded by an investigation by the General Directorate for Competition, which decided to proceed with the fine in agreement with the Paris public prosecutor. The investigation began in January 2018, when the prosecutor's office began to deal with complaints about the slowdown of older models of iPhones after the transition to the operating system iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2. The aforementioned investigation ultimately proved that Apple did not actually inform users of the possible slowdown of older devices in the case of the updates in question.

Apple officially confirmed the slowdown of older iPhones in late 2017. In its statement, it said that the slowdown affected the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s, and iPhone SE. The mentioned versions of the operating systems were able to recognize the state of the battery and adapt the processor performance to it, so as not to overload it. At the same time, the company confirmed that the same function will be available in the next versions of its operating systems. However, in many cases, users could not return to an older version of iOS – so they were forced to either deal with a slow smartphone, or replace the battery or simply buy a new iPhone. A lack of awareness has led to many users switching to a newer model, believing that their current iPhone has expired.

Apple is not contesting the fine and will pay it in full. The company also committed to publishing the related press release, which it will place on its website for a period of one month.
