Apple's chief designer Jony Ive sat down with fashion brand Dior's artistic director Kim Jones for an interview for the upcoming spring/summer edition of Document Journal magazine. While the magazine will not be published until May, the full interview of the two personalities has already appeared online. The topics of the conversation did not revolve exclusively around design - for example, the issue of the environment was also discussed.

In this context, Jony Ive highlighted the work of Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president for the environment. He noted that if design responsibility is coupled with the right motivation and the right values, everything else will fall into place. According to Ive, the status of an innovative company brings with it some specific challenges.

These take the form of numerous areas for which the company must be responsible. “If you're innovating and doing something new, there are consequences that you can't foresee,” he said, adding that this responsibility goes far beyond just releasing the product. About the process of working with new technologies, Ive said that he often gets the feeling that the given idea will never be transformed into a working prototype. "It takes a special kind of patience," he explained.

What connects Ive and Jones' work is that they both often work on products that sometimes may not be released for months or years at all. Both of them have to adapt the way they think about the product design process to this style of work. In an interview, Jones expressed his admiration for how Apple is able to plan the creation of its products in advance, and compared his precise work to the creation of the Dior brand. "People come into the store and see the same handwriting," he said.
