She appeared at the end of June message that long-time chief designer Jony Ive is leaving Apple and starting his own design studio, which will be strongly connected to Apple. Ive's departure from Apple was not an overnight process. Now, however, his official work ties to Apple are effectively gone.

Apple indeed updated the list of people in its top management and Jony Ive was removed from the list. Interestingly, no other person with a purely design focus took his place. Evans Hankey and Alan Dye have been chosen as the notional successors to Ive, neither of whom has a profile on the list of senior managers.

Ive has held the position of Chief Design Officer at Apple since 2015, effectively removing him from the purely creative position he previously held. This new post was more of a managerial one. He was originally supposed to return to the original position, which focused more on the day-to-day involvement in the design process of Apple products, in 2017, but as it turned out a few months later, it did not lead to anything positive.

From unofficial sources, reports began to appear that Ive's involvement in the process at Apple gradually declined and that he had not been involved in product design much since the implementation of Apple Park. Perhaps there was a gradual ideological or professional split and Ive decided to go his own way.

With a second partner, Ive founded the design-consulting company LoveFrom, which is based in London and whose first partner should be Apple. It is still not clear what we can imagine under this type of cooperation. It is probably unrealistic that an external company would participate in the design of Apple's flagship products such as iPhones, iPads and Macs. However, we can probably expect involvement in the design of various types of accessories, such as wristbands for the Apple Watch or new covers/cases for iPhones, iPads or Macs.

Either way, the Jony Ive era at Apple is officially over. Whether that's good or bad remains to be seen, but if the new 16″ MacBook Pro is any indication, function could once again begin to outweigh clinging too much to form.
