Apple likes to brag about its products' security and overall emphasis on privacy. In general, these devices are therefore referred to as safer, in which not only their software but also their hardware equipment plays an important role. For example, in the case of iPhones, iPads, Macs or Apple Watch, we find an important Secure Enclave co-processor providing another additional layer of security. But now let's focus on Macs, specifically on apple laptops.

As we mentioned above, in the case of device security, both the operating system and the hardware itself play an important role. Macs are no exception to this. It offers, for example, data encryption, device protection with Touch ID biometric authentication, secure Internet browsing with the native Safari browser (which can mask the IP address and block trackers) and many others. After all, these are benefits that we all know very well about. However, a number of smaller security functions are still offered, which no longer receive such attention.

In the case of MacBooks, Apple also ensures that the user is not eavesdropped. As soon as the laptop lid is closed, the microphone is disconnected by hardware and thus becomes non-functional. This makes the Mac instantly deaf. Although it has an internal microphone, it cannot be used in such a situation, so you do not have to worry about someone eavesdropping on you.

An advantage in the role of an obstacle

We can unequivocally call this gadget of apple laptops a great addition that will once again support the overall level of security and help with privacy protection. On the other hand, it can also bring some problems. In the apple-growing community, we would find a number of users who use their MacBook in the so-called clamshell mode. They have the laptop closed on the table and connect an external monitor, keyboard and mouse/trackpad to it. Simply put, they turn a laptop into a desktop. And that may be the main problem. As soon as the aforementioned lid is closed, the microphone is immediately disconnected and cannot be used.

So if users want to use their laptop in the aforementioned clamshell mode, and at the same time need a microphone, they have no choice but to rely on an alternative. Of course, in the apple environment, Apple AirPods headphones can be offered. But in this case we encounter another known problem. Apple headphones don't exactly get along with Macs - when using the microphone at the same time, the headphones can't handle the transmission, which causes a rapid reduction in the bitrate and thus the overall quality. Therefore, those who do not want to give up quality sound must opt for an external microphone.

In the end, there is still the question of how to actually solve this whole situation, and whether we need any change at all. It is not a mistake. In short, MacBooks are designed this way and in the end they only fulfill their function. According to a simple equation, lid closed = microphone disconnected. Would you like Apple to come up with a solution, or do you think the emphasis on security is more important?
