Another Apple event is expected to be pre-recorded on Tuesday, March 8. We could expect the iPhone SE 3rd generation, the iPad Air 5th generation, and computers with the M2 chip, which will probably take up the most time of the entire Keynote. Maybe the last one, which will be broadcast live, but still from a recording.

With the onset of the global coronavirus pandemic, many companies had to adjust their established practices. Apart from Home Offices, the concept of introducing new products and services was also discussed. Since the accumulation of a large number of people in one place was not desirable, Apple reached for the pre-recorded format of its presentations.

Employees begin to return to offices

This first happened with WWDC 2020, it was the same last time, i.e. in the fall of last year, and it will be the same now. But it could also be the last time. According to available information, Apple itself is already starting to call its employees to Apple Park. From April 11, everything could start to go back to normal, at least here and in the other offices of the company.

The COVID-19 pandemic around the world is slowly losing its strength, thanks to being soaked and vaccinated, so the company's employees should return to work at least one working day a week from the specified date. By the beginning of May there should be two days, by the end of the month three. So there is a theoretical chance that this year's WWDC22 could already have the old familiar form, that is, the one where developers from all over the world will gather. Although certainly not in the same amount as it was before 2020.

If all goes according to plan and employees actually start returning to the office, then even if the company would not make it to the June deadline for its developer conference, there is a chance that the first "live" Keynote since the outbreak of the pandemic could be the one with the introduction of the iPhones on the 14th. It is expected that this would be scheduled for a typical September date. But will it be appropriate to return to the live format?

Advantages and disadvantages

If you look at any of the company's pre-filmed events, you can clearly see the quality of the writing and directing work, as well as that done by the special effects artists. It looks good, there is no room for error and it has pace and flow. On the other hand, it lacks humanity. This is not only in the form of the reactions of the live audience, which is surprised, laughs and applauds like in a TV sitcom, but also in the form of nervousness of the presenters and their arguments and often mistakes, which even Apple did not avoid in this format.

But it's convenient for Apple (and everyone else). They don't have to deal with the capacity of the hall, they don't have to deal with technical arrangements, they don't have to take exams. Each person coolly and calmly recites their own thing at a time that suits them, and they move on. In the cutting room, everything is then adjusted in such a way as to eliminate unnecessary things, which often cannot be assessed during tests. In the case of pre-recording, working with the camera is also more interesting, because there is time and peace for that. After the end of the event, the video can also be immediately available on YouTube, complete with appropriate bookmarks.

As much as I'm a fan of live presentations, I actually wouldn't be mad at Apple at all if they resorted to a combination of both. Not in the way that part of the event was pre-recorded and part live, but if the important ones were live (iPhones) and the less interesting ones were only pre-recorded (WWDC). After all, presenting new operating systems directly encourages you to show everything in its full beauty in the form of videos, rather than just a live demo on stage.
