Samsung introduced a trio of new mid-range smartphones. This includes the rather low-end Galaxy A14 in both LTE and 5G versions, Galaxy A34 and A54, both with 5G nicknames. Is it a shame Apple doesn't make cheap phones? When an iPhone user picks up the new Samsung trio, he has conflicting impressions.

About the cheapest Galaxy A14 at a price of around 5 CZK, it doesn't make much sense to talk about it, because considering just how much it costs, it is clear that it is very limited in terms of equipment. An iPhone user does not and will not want such a phone, which is not true of Android phone users around the world. It can be expected that this will be a sales bestseller.

He has already stepped forward to know better Galaxy A34 5G. With a price below CZK 10, it is quite commendable that Samsung gave it a giant 6,6" FHD+ Super AMOLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, which basic iPhones can still only dream of, and it costs more than twice as much. The brightness of 2 nits, the long life of the 1mAh battery and the IP 000 rating are also clearly appreciated. The trio of cameras with the main 5 MPx will clearly overshadow the iPhone SE.

Galaxy A54 5G it already costs CZK 12, but it improves not only the camera setup itself (the front camera here has 32 MPx), to which it also adds an adaptive display refresh rate of two steps (60 and 120 Hz). But both models lack wireless charging, although the higher-end one has a glass back, which is just for effect. And yes, both can also Always-On.

Great displays, poor construction

What should be praised are the displays, not only with regard to their size, but also the refresh rate. Considering that it's actually the most common thing you see from a phone, it's a shame that Apple is still so limited in this and doesn't want to let modern technology into the basic models. The cameras won't be among the best, which they don't have, but they will be ideal for snapshots, especially if there is an automatic night mode (on the Galaxy A54 5G). The device is mainly put down by one thing - they are not really very nice.

Both higher end models have a plastic bezel that is matte and doesn't look good from any angle. Even though the design of the back is taken from the Galaxy S23, the photo modules of the A54 stick out extremely above the back, even if it is a lower specification, as is the case with the S series. In addition, both devices are very thick, at least subjectively, which optically just supports the present plastic. What will annoy you is the USB-C connector, which is offset. Even the Galaxy S23 has it, but only minimally and you hardly notice it. It's a bump, but even that has an effect on the final impression.

To put it simply, the hungry apple lover will not be interested in Samsung's news so much as in the appearance, but rather in the specifications, which can really envy them in the given price range. Even so, it can still be said that they would rather pay extra and buy an iPhone SE or, better yet, one of the older versions of iPhones. Sure, it will be beaten especially in the quality of the display, but it will still make money in terms of user experience. In addition, the performance of an iPhone that is several years old will still be better, as is the case here with the Dimensity 1080 or the Exynos 1380 (this is not to say that their performance is bad).

A plastic iPhone? Why not

I can quite well imagine Apple making a plastic iPhone again. I don't see anything wrong with it, but plastic is not like plastic and the one in the current A's just looks cheap. But imagine if Apple made an iPhone SE with a plastic frame like the one used on AirPods, or the one used on the iPhone 3G. It certainly wouldn't offend me as much as it does here.

Premium materials, such as aluminum and steel, are simply used only in the top classes and have no place here. Well, at least until now, when even glass has penetrated here. The Galaxy A34 and A54 are certainly not bad phones, but if Samsung wants to attract Apple buyers with deeper pockets, it should rather go for it by renewing the Galaxy S FE series, where in the case of the Galaxy S21 FE we already had at least the aluminum frame, and if only a plastic back.
