Mammoth, Monterey, Rincon or Skyline. This is not a list of random words, but possible names for the upcoming macOS 10.15, which Apple will present in less than a week.

Long gone are the days when Mac operating systems were named after felines. A fundamental change came in 2013, when the then OS X 10.9 was named after the surfing area Mavericks. Since then, Apple has started using well-known places in California as names for its next versions of macOS / OS X. The series has reached the Yosemite National Park, the rock face of El Capitan, the Sierra Mountains (in other words, the High Sierra) and finally the Mojave Desert.

Many people may wonder how Apple will name the upcoming macOS 10.15. There are several candidates and their list was provided to the interested public by Apple itself. The company already had trademarks issued for a total of 19 different designations years ago. She did it in a rather sophisticated way, as she used her "secret" companies for registrations, through which she also submits requests regarding hardware products, so that they do not leak before the premiere. Some of these names have already been used by Apple during that time, but some of them still remain and a number have already expired, thanks to which we are plagued with a list of potential names for macOS 10.15.

Currently, Apple can only use any of the following names: Mammoth, Rincon, Monterey, and Skyline. The names are more or less the same as candidates for the new version of macOS, but the most likely name is Mammoth, whose trademark protection had it reset by Apple earlier this month. However, Mammoth does not refer to an already extinct species of animal, but rather to the Mammoth Mountain lava mountain complex in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the city of Mammoth Lake in California.

In contrast, Monterey is a historic city on the Pacific coast, Rincon is a popular surfing area in Southern California, and Skyline most likely refers to Skyline Boulevard, a boulevard that follows the crest of the Santa Cruz Mountains on the Pacific coast.

macOS 10.15 already on Monday

One way or another, we will know the name and all the news of macOS 10.15 already next week on Monday, June 3, when the opening Keynote of the WWDC developer conference will take place. In addition to the new name, the system should offer expanded authentication options via Apple Watch, the Screen Time function known from iOS 12, support for shortcuts, separate applications for Apple Music, Podcasts and Apple TV and, of course, a number of others, flipped from iOS with the help of the Marzipan project. According to the information so far, there should not be an option to use it either iPad as an external monitor for Mac.
