Quite a lot has been written about the 4th generation iPhone SE, but the facts keep changing. Until now, it has been approached in such a way that Apple takes the chassis of an old model and improves it with a more powerful chip. In the final, however, it can be completely different, and much better than what many had even hoped for.

If we look at all three generations, the strategy looked quite transparent: "We'll take an iPhone 5S or an iPhone 8 and give it a new chip plus a few little things and it's going to be a lighter and more affordable model." That's how the 4th generation iPhone SE was also considered. The clear candidate for this was the iPhone XR, which Apple introduced a year after the anniversary iPhone X with the iPhone XS. It only has an LCD display and one camera, but it already offers Face ID. But Apple may finally change this strategy and develop an iPhone SE that will be original, so it will not be directly based on some already known model. I mean, almost.

Just one camera

As available information the new iPhone SE is codenamed Ghost. Apple will not use the older chassis in it, but it will be based on the iPhone 14, but it will not be the same chassis, because Apple will modify it for a more affordable model. According to leaks, the iPhone SE 4 is expected to be 6 grams lighter than the iPhone 14, with this change likely due to the budget version of the iPhone losing its ultra-wide-angle camera.

It will therefore be equipped with only one 46 MPx camera, which, on the other hand, bears the Portland designation. But many people will definitely want an ultra-wide-angle lens, because frankly speaking, yes, there are situations when it is appropriate to take pictures with it every day, but definitely not. In addition, with a 48 MPx resolution, a more usable 2x zoom, which is offered by the iPhone 15, could be achieved. It is just a question of what Apple will want to provide to the new product so that it does not cannibalize the existing portfolio.

Action button and USB-C

The fourth generation ‌iPhone SE‌ should then use the same 6013 T6 aluminum as found in the ‌iPhone 14‌, the back will logically be glass with support for wireless MagSafe charging. That's kind of expected, but what might be surprising is that there should be an Action button and USB-C (although it probably won't work any other way for the latter). As for the Action button, it is expected that Apple will deploy it in the complete iPhone 16 series, and for the new SE to better correspond with them, its use may be logical. This may also be due to the fact that we won't actually see this more affordable Apple innovation next year at all, but it will be presented only in the spring of 2025.

Will there be Dynamic Island? Face ID for sure, but probably only in a reduced cutout, which was first shown by the iPhone 13. And what about the price? Of course, we can only argue about that for now. The current 64GB iPhone SE starts at CZK 12, which would certainly be positive if the new generation also set such a price tag. But it's still a year and a half before we see the show, and a lot can change in that time. However, if Apple really came up with the iPhone SE model described here, and with such a price tag, it could be a hit. Not everyone needs a feature-packed phone, but wants an iPhone. Instead of buying older generations, this could be an ideal solution that will not only be up-to-date in terms of performance but will also guarantee long-term iOS support.
