Chat platforms are fighting each other for every user, because it is their number that determines their overall popularity. They also usually race each other to add very similar features because none of them want to be left behind with what users might like. But where everyone, with the exception of Telegram and perhaps iMessage, is behind is the size of the file and the media you send through them.

iMessage

For quite a long time, there was some awareness that Apple allows files to be sent through its iMessage 100 MB. So if you do not exceed this limit, you will be sure to send content without drastic compression. Also, the video must not exceed 4 minutes and 20 seconds in length. However, different from iOS 14.4 experiments have shown, that a 1,75 GB video can also be sent via iMessage. However, it is necessary to take into account a certain amount of its compression. The more data-intensive the video, the greater the compression.

WhatsApp

The world's most widespread communication platform is paradoxically also the most limited. It currently allows sending 100MB files, although the platform is already testing sending files up to 2GB in size. But this only applies to documents, because media such as photos, videos or voice messages can only be sent up to the size of 16 MB.

Messenger

Even Facebook Messenger is not exactly a leader in this regard. It doesn't matter what attachments you send, whether they are photos, videos, audio recordings or documents. There is a limit of 25 MB for all types of files and media, you won't cram even a photo larger than 85 MPx.

Rakuten Viber

Originally Cypriot, and after the acquisition in 2014 by the multinational company Rakuten rather Japanese, the Viber service will allow sending photos of unlimited size, video clips up to 200 MB but not exceeding 180 s, and GIFs up to 24 MB.

Telegram

Ever-growing Telegram says you can use it to send media and files without limits on their type and size. In the final, however, a certain ceiling is determined, and it is indeed a relatively generous one. It is 2 GB and it doesn't matter if it is a video, a ZIP file, a music recording, etc.

Signal

Even Signal sticks to the established standard of 100 MB. But it doesn't make any difference what medium it is.

Google Chat

Google's chat platform, which is slowly but surely replacing Hangouts, will allow sending files up to 200 MB.

Across applications, typically supported image files are the most common, i.e. BMP, GIF, JPG, JPEG, PNG, WBMP, HEIC, SVG or WEBP. For video, these are AVI, WMV, MOV, MP4, 3GPP, 3Gpp2, ASF, MKV MP2TS or WEBM files.
