Apple introduced the AirTag in April 2021, so it's now been two years since its debut without a hardware upgrade. It is still a fairly thick plate without a loop hole. But that might not be the way for the next generations of this localizer. The competition shows that they can do more.

Different locators were here long before AirTag and of course come after it. Now, after all, there is speculation that Google should also bring its first localizer and that Samsung is preparing the second generation of its Galaxy SmartTag. Apple, or rather many analysts, are still silent about the future generation of AirTag. But it does not mean that speculators too.

They have already rushed with what his new generation should be able to do. In the list of specifications, of course, they mention an even more accurate search in combination with a longer range of Bluetooth technology. It is quite logical that the greater range will offer greater usability of the AirTag. It is equipped with an ultra-wideband U1 chip, thanks to which it can be located with a compatible iPhone, which is equipped with the same chip, with appropriate accuracy. But isn't it time to upgrade the chip?

A pancake is no longer enough

The clear limits of AirTag are its dimensions. Not in the sense that it's missing a hole and you have to buy an equally expensive accessory to mount it somewhere. This is a clear (and smart) plan by Apple. The problem is the thickness, which is still considerable and makes it quite impossible to use the AirTag in, for example, a wallet. But we know from the competition that they can make locators in the shape and size of payment cards, which can fit into every wallet.

So Apple would not necessarily have to deal with technology, as much as a portfolio of shapes. The classic AirTag is suitable for keys and luggage, but the AirTag Card would ideally be used in wallets, the roller-shaped AirTag Cyklo locator could be hidden in bicycle handlebars, etc. It is true that even though the AirTag in combination with the Find network is relatively a revolutionary act, it hasn't spread much yet and companies are accepting it only very cautiously.

Only a handful of them somehow implement this technology in their solution. We have a few bikes and a few backpacks, but that's about it. Additionally, AirTag needs a revival. After two years on the market, many Apple device users already own it and practically nothing forces them to buy more. Sales thus logically have nowhere to grow. However, if the company came up with an AirTag Card solution, I would certainly at least order it immediately to replace the classic AirTag that I have in my wallet and it only gets in the way.
