Google Street View has been here with us for 15 years. To mark the occasion, this feature available within Google Maps is also getting several new options. The biggest one is looking back into the past, but Street View Studio is also interesting. But how has Street View itself evolved over the years?

Google Street View is available in Google Maps as well as Google Earth, and it is a panoramic view available in many cities and countries around the world. Typically, these are views taken from a height of 2,5 meters and at 10m intervals. The function was first introduced in several US cities on May 25, 2007.

But Street View is not only available on the web, but also on mobile platforms. The function was already seen on iPhones in November 2008. It was followed by other, now rather dead platforms, such as Symbian and Windows Mobile. The function is of course also available on Android, which also belongs to Google.

In April 2014, the ability to compare images over time was added to the web interface. It is possible for those locations that have already been scanned several times as part of individual updates. This feature is now also available on iOS and Android mobile platforms. In the Google Maps application, you will see the Show more data button, which will open a menu with a selection of older images that are charged for the given location. Of course, they cannot be older than 2007.

ISS and Japan from a dog's point of view

When the function debuted in the US in 2007, the following year it expanded to European countries, i.e. France, Italy, Spain, but also to Australia, New Zealand or Japan. Over the years, more and more places and countries were added, and the Czech Republic came next in 2009. In addition to outdoor spaces, you can also visit various museums, galleries, universities, businesses and other interiors in the service. Here, for example, the Kampa Museum, in Germany the Berlin National Museum, in Great Britain Tate Britain and Tate Modern, etc.

Of particular interest is the fact that since 2017 you can also walk through the International Space Station in Street View, and a year later the option to view Japanese streets from a dog's point of view was added. In December 2020, Google announced that users can contribute to Street View using their AR-enabled phones. After all, this is followed by another current novelty, i.e. Street View Studio. This option allows users to quickly and mass publish 360-degree sequences of their images of a given location. They can also be filtered by file name, location and processing status.
