Face ID has been available on iPhones since 2017. It was in this year that we saw the introduction of the revolutionary iPhone X, which determined how Apple smartphones would look in the coming years. In recent years, Face ID has seen interesting improvements - you can learn more about them in the article I have attached below. One of these improvements is undoubtedly speed, which is constantly increasing. So if you were to put iPhone X and iPhone 13 (Pro) next to each other, you would be able to recognize the speed difference practically at first glance, even with older devices the verification is still very fast. Let's see together in this article how you can speed up Face ID especially on older devices.

Adding an alternate skin

If you've owned an iPhone with Touch ID in the past, you know that you could add up to five different fingerprints. With Face ID, this is not possible - specifically, you can add one face, together with an alternative appearance, which is suitable for example for women wearing makeup, or for individuals who wear glasses. If you have a problem with the speed of verification in specific situations, try adding an alternative appearance in them. It's possible that your iPhone can't recognize you because of some add-on or change, so you're telling it that it's you. You add an alternative look in Settings → Face ID and passcode, where you tap on Add an alternate skin and perform a face scan.

Deactivating the attention requirement

Face ID is really elaborated in every detail. When we first encountered Face ID at the presentation, many fans were worried that your iPhone would be able to be unlocked while you were sleeping just by scanning your face. However, the opposite is true, as the engineers at Apple thought of this as well. In order for your iPhone with Face ID to open, it is necessary to prove your attention, i.e. by moving your eyes, for example. This prevents unlocking in sleep and dead people among other things. The process of demanding attention is quick, but it takes some time. If you turn off this Face ID function, you will gain time for the good, but on the other hand, you will lose a security element. If you are willing to trade security for speed, you can deactivate it in Settings → Face ID and passcode, where below in the section Attention do it Require deactivation for Face ID.

You don't have to wait for recognition

If you decide to use Face ID to unlock your iPhone, you are probably always waiting at the top of the locked screen for the lock to switch from locked to unlocked. Only then swipe your finger from the bottom edge of the display upwards. But did you know that you don't have to wait for anything? If it's really you in front of an iPhone with Face ID, it will be recognized almost instantly. This means that immediately after the display lights up, you can swipe up from the bottom edge and not wait for the lock at the top of the screen to unlock.

Checking the protective glass

Most users use tempered glass to protect their iPhone's display. In case of improper gluing of the tempered glass, a bubble may appear between it and the display, or some dirt may remain there. It doesn't matter that much in the display area, although it can be annoying in certain places. But the problem arises if a bubble or dirt appears in the cutout where, in addition to the TrueDepth camera, the other Face ID elements are located. From my own experience, I can confirm that the bubble between the glass and the display causes partial and gradually complete non-functionality of Face ID. So, if you have problems with Face ID unlocking slowly, check the glass, or remove it and stick a new one.

Getting a new iPhone

If you've done all of the above and Face ID still seems slow, I have only one solution for you – you'll have to get a new iPhone. Since I had the opportunity to review all Apple phones with Face ID, I can confirm that the higher unlocking speed is noticeable on the newer iPhones. Personally, I have been working on an iPhone XS since the introduction, and with the last reviewed iPhone 13 Pro, I should have changed my smartphone due to the speed of Face ID, but in the end I decided to wait. You don't have to wait for anything and you can buy a new iPhone immediately, for example from the link below.
