I don't know if you have the same experience as me, but I personally use AirDrop on a daily basis on my Mac and iPhone. Most often, I use it to transfer photos across both devices, but sometimes I also send a larger batch of documents from one Mac to another without any problems. Simply put, AirDrop is a feature that can save me a lot of time and nerves. But the only thing that annoys me about AirDrop is the fact that I can't manually set where the received files will be saved. These are automatically saved in the Downloads folder. And if you think that the change is possible somewhere in the settings, then you are wrong.

It's hard to say whether the Apple engineers simply forgot about this possibility, or whether it has some greater significance. But as it happens, people are resourceful and always find a way to change even the practically impossible. And in this case it is also true. So, below you can see how you can edit the location of files that have been received through AirDrop. This is a rather complicated tutorial, but I think the average macOS user will understand the principle without the slightest problem.

How to change the storage location of received files from AirDrop

First we need to download a script that will allow us to save the received files elsewhere. You can download it from GitHub using this link. Special thanks to the user for this script menushka, who was responsible for its creation. On the GitHub page, just click on the button on the right side of the screen Download Zip. Once the ZIP file is downloaded to you, unpack. You will then see a file named airdropSorter.scpt, on which double tap for opening it. Now it is necessary that we change the very first line with the name property AIRDROP_FOLDER. Edit this line with the path so that the classic slashes in the path to the folder where the new files are to be saved, replace with colons. Quotation marks must be in the way remain. For example, if you choose this path:

Macintosh HD/Users/paveljelic/Downloads/AirDrop

So we write it in the line mentioned above thus:

"Macintosh HD:Users:paveljelic:Downloads:AirDrop"

Then just a script impose. If you fail to save it, create it copies and rename it to its original name. Now we need to move it to a special folder for scripts. Therefore, open the hidden folder now Library. You can do so in the active window Finder, when you hold down the key options, and then click on the tab in the top bar Open. Here then go to the folder scripts, where you click on the subfolder Folder Action Scripts. So the full path to this folder is as follows:

/Users/paveljelic/Library/Scripts/Folder Action Scripts

If the folder here Folder Action Scripts does not find keep it simple create. After that, all you have to do is to script airdropSorter.scpt, which we modified, moved to this folder. Now all we have left is the script activate. So go to the folder Downloading and click on it with two fingers (right click). Then hover over the option services, and then click the option from the next menu Set Folder Actions… Now in the new window select an option from the list airdropSorter.scpt and click the button Attach. Then you can Folder Actions Settings window close. Now all the items you receive on your Mac via AirDrop should be saved to the folder of your choice.

In previous versions of macOS, the procedure was slightly different, so you should keep in mind that this procedure only works on macOS 10.14 Mojave and is not guaranteed to work on macOS 10.15 Catalina. It's a real shame that you can't simply set where all files received by AirDrop will be saved in the macOS preferences, but you have to solve it in such a complicated way through scripts. So we can only hope that Apple will decide to add this feature to the system in future versions of macOS.
