Have you suddenly lost data (photos, files, e-mails or favorite songs) stored on your smart device from Apple? If you back up regularly, such a failure shouldn't put you at risk. In case not, the experts at DataHelp have written procedures and advice for you that can help in such a situation.

First of all, it must be said that there is not much difference in saving data from Apple products compared to other devices. The process of obtaining unavailable data from devices such as iPad, iPhone, iMac, iPod or MacBook is solved in a similar way as in the case of devices of other brands, because they use similar data media.

"The only major differences are in a different file system for Apple notebooks (HSF or HSF+ file system). It's good and fast, but not very durable. If it is physically damaged, the file system will fall apart, making data recovery difficult. But we can deal with that as well," states Štěpán Mikeš, an expert in data recovery from Apple products from the company DataHelp and further clarifies: "The second difference is in the connectors of the SSD drives on the notebook. It is necessary to possess the necessary reductions."

Damaged disk or backup media

An unpleasant situation occurs if a disk is damaged or fails on one of the Apple laptops. This can happen mechanically, with electricity or with liquid (in the case of a classic hard disk with platters). No recovery software will help you here. Don't entrust it to a regular service or a neighbor's IT handyman, but turn to specialists. A layman's repair can do much more damage (disks are mechanically very sensitive devices) and it often happens that it is not possible to save the data afterwards.

You can also save data from your phone or tablet

If your iPhone or iPad has been damaged and you had valuable data, photos, etc. on them, it is possible to save them under certain conditions. These devices store data on media using SSD technology, flash memory. They use encryption as a function of the technology. It is important to stop using the device immediately and contact a specialized service or data recovery experts as soon as possible. They can read data from a damaged memory chip, decipher it using a certain decryption method and then reconstruct it.

The good news is that data usually remains recorded in individual data cells even after deletion until new information replaces it. So there is a good chance that an expert will get your lost data from the chip.

Some useful tips

  • On the Internet, you will find a number of specialized programs that can recover deleted data. But if you don't know exactly what you're doing, what those programs are doing with the data on the disk, don't try to restore it. You can do more harm than good.
  • If data loss occurs, save your broken work to an external disk or flash drive, do not save to the disk in the damaged device. Do not empty the recycle bin (do not delete files). Moving or deleting data on damaged media can make it difficult or even impossible to successfully recover data. Even though you have deleted the file from the disk, the data is still on the disk. They will only be removed/deleted when there is no free space on the disk. This situation is common when working with large amounts of data, such as video editing or photo editing.
  • Turn off your computer and proceed according to the instructions on this page.

What if you delete your data by mistake?

Have you accidentally deleted important data and need to recover it? In many cases, just plug in an external drive and start the recovery process using Time Machine or other software. But if you don't back up regularly or even at all, the situation is somewhat complicated. You can try to save the data yourself with the program DiskWarrior. However, we strongly warn that if you do not understand the issue and the data is valuable to you, it is better to leave the rescue in the hands of experts!

Frequently asked questions about data recovery

How is data recovery successful?
If the above procedures are followed, we can speak of up to 90% success rate.

Is it possible to recover data that has been deleted using the Secure Erase feature?
Rescue is a bit more complicated. About 10% of the memory cells that are used less are overwritten. Nevertheless, it is possible to save approx. 60-70% of the data.

Is it possible to recover data from a Macintosh that uses disk encryption?
The operating system does not matter, the procedure is the same for all. If you decide to use disk encryption, a backup of passwords and encryption keys is necessary - export them to a flash drive. Don't just leave them on disk! If you don't have your passwords/keys backed up and there is a problem, for example, with significant damage to the disk's platters, it will be very difficult to decrypt and save the data.

What is the difference between data recovery from flash drive, hard drive, CD or SDD?
The differences are significant. It depends on whether it is a software or hardware fault. On this data recovery pricing guide you will find more detailed information to help you diagnose the problem.

In the case of which damages should professionals be consulted for data recovery?
It is always a good idea to seek professional service in the case of mechanical faults, damage to service data and errors in the firmware. These are manufacturing or mechanical errors and damage.
