The sound you hear on your device every time you turn it on can become annoying over time. It becomes especially annoying in late-night or early-morning families, when you need to work from the morning, but your significant other is still sleeping next to you. In general, in my opinion, these various sounds during shutdown / power-up or other actions are more unwanted than useful. So, in case you decided to get rid of the start-up sound once and for all, continue reading this guide, where we will describe how to do it.

How to turn off the startup sound

Method number 1

With the first method, there is no need to interfere with the system at all. It is rather information that I will tell you in the following sentences. If you didn't already know, your macOS device remembers the volume level you turned it off at. So if you turn off your Mac or MacBook with the volume set to full, you can look forward to a not-so-pleasant wake-up call when you turn on the device. Therefore, if you do not want to interfere with the system, you will need to completely silence the Mac or MacBook before each shutdown. But if you don't want to pay attention to the daily silencing, there is a second, slightly more complicated way.

Method number 2

If you have decided to turn off the welcome sound completely on your device, proceed as follows:

  • In the upper right part of the screen in the top bar, click on Lupu, which starts Spotlight.
  • We write in Spotlight search Terminal
  • We will confirm Enter
  • Terminal we can also open through Launchpad – here it is located in the folder Utility
  • Do Terminal then we write the following command (without quotes): "sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80"
  • After that, just confirm the command with a key Enter
  • The terminal will now prompt you password – do it.
  • At first glance, when typing the password, it may seem that the Terminal does not respond - this is not the case, for security reasons, you must type the password "blindly"
  • Once you've typed the password blindly, just confirm it with a key Enter
  • After successfully entering the command, your macOS device will no longer make any sound when it starts up

Should you decide to revive the welcome sound, just follow the same steps as above. But replace the command with this command (without quotes): "sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume".
