If you're annoyed that every time you turn on or restart your MacBook or Mac, several applications that you don't need start up, then you've come to the right place today. Today, in this guide, we will show you how to manually determine in the settings of your Apple device which applications will and will not be launched after the system starts. In the competing Windows operating system, this option is found in the Task Manager. In macOS, however, this option is hidden a little deeper in the system, and unless you have explicitly "explored" the entire system preferences, you most likely will not know where this setting is located. So how to do it?

How to determine which applications start at system startup

  • On our macOS device, we click in the left part of the top bar apple logo icon
  • Select an option from the displayed menu System Preferences…
  • In the window that appears, click in the lower left part on Users and groups
  • In the left menu, check that we are logged in to the profile we want to make changes to
  • Then select the option in the top menu Login
  • In order to make adjustments, click on at the bottom of the window lock and we authorize ourselves with the password
  • Now we can simply choose whether we want an application when the system starts by checking the box hide
  • If we want to turn off the loading of any of the applications completely, we choose below the table minus icon
  • On the contrary, if we want a specific application to start automatically when logging in, we click on plus and we will add it

With newer Macs and MacBooks that are already equipped with extra fast SSD drives, there is no longer a problem with system loading speed. It can be worse on older devices, where every application that needs to run at system startup can shave precious seconds off a full system load. Precisely in this case, you can use this guide and turn off the loading of some applications, which will lead to a faster system start.
