In the event that alongside a macOS device, i.e. Mac or MacBook, you also use an iPhone or iPad, you are most likely used to automatic capitalization and periods in sentences. As for the keyboard itself, you use these two functions on your devices every day and don't even realize it. Personally, I've gotten so used to the automatic capital letters and periods on the iPhone that I couldn't exist without them - or rather, I could, but it would take me a lot more time to write any text. If you didn't know that, just like in iOS, the automatic capitalization and period features can be set in macOS, then you're in the right place. Today we will show you how to do it.

Automatic capitalization and periods

  • In the left part of the upper bar, click on Apple logo icon
  • Choose from the displayed drop-down menu System Preferences…
  • A window will open in which we select a section Keyboard
  • Then select the tab in the top menu text
  • Now just check two features – Automatically adjust font size a Add a period using a double space
  • Once we check these two functions, we can the preferences window close

The first feature, called Auto-case, will ensure that capital letters are automatically written where appropriate. If you check the second option called Add a period using a double space, you will achieve that whenever you press the space twice in a row, a period will be automatically written. So you don't have to "dodge" your finger away from the spacebar, and instead of pressing the key to write a period, you just need to press the spacebar twice in a row. In my opinion, both of these features are very useful and, just like in iOS, they will save you a lot of time on your Macs or MacBooks.
