iOS 16 has been available to the public for several weeks, during which Apple even released several other minor updates aimed at fixing bugs. Even so, the Californian giant still hasn't managed to solve one major flaw – specifically, users complain in large numbers about the pitiful battery life per charge. Of course, after each update you have to wait a while for everything to settle down and finish the background processes, but even waiting doesn't help apple users at all. In this article, we will look together at 5 basic tips for at least temporarily extending battery life in iOS 16.

Restrictions on location services

Some applications, and possibly also websites, may use your location services. While, for example, access to location makes sense for navigation applications, it does not for many other applications. The truth is that location services often use social networks, for example, just to target ads more precisely. Thus, users should definitely have an overview of which applications are accessing their location, not only for privacy reasons, but also because of excessive battery consumption. For checking the use of location services go to Settings → Privacy and Security → Location Services, where you can now manage them.

Turn off background updates

Whenever you open, for example, Weather on your iPhone, you will always immediately see the latest forecast and other information. The same applies to, for example, social networks, where the latest content always appears when you open it. Background updates are responsible for this display of the latest data, but they have one drawback - they consume a lot of power. So if you're willing to wait a few seconds for the latest content to load after moving to apps, you can background updates limit or completely turn off. You do so in Settings → General → Background Updates.

Activating dark mode

Do you own an iPhone X and later, excluding the XR, 11 and SE models? If so, then you surely know that your apple phone has an OLED display. The latter is special in that it can display black by turning off the pixels. Thanks to this, black is really black, but in addition, displaying black can also save battery, since the pixels are simply turned off. The best way to get the most black display is to enable dark mode, which you do in Settings → Display and brightness, where at the top tap on Dark. If you additionally activate Automatically and open Elections, you can set automatic switching light and dark mode.

Deactivation of 5G

If you have an iPhone 12 (Pro) and later, you can use the fifth generation network, i.e. 5G. The coverage of 5G networks is constantly expanding over time, but in the Czech Republic it is still not quite ideal and you will find it mainly in larger cities. The use of 5G itself is not demanding on the battery, but the problem is if you are in a place where 5G coverage ends and there is frequent switching between LTE/4G and 5G. Such frequent switching can drain your battery very quickly, so it is better to turn off 5G. You can do this by going to Settings → Mobile data → Data options → Voice and data, where you activate LTE.

Turn off downloading updates

In order to be safe when using your iPhone, it is necessary that you regularly update both the iOS system and the applications themselves. By default, all updates are automatically downloaded in the background, which is nice on the one hand, but on the other hand, any background activity causes more battery consumption. So if you are willing to check for updates manually, you can turn off the automatic ones. To turn off the automatic download of iOS updates, just go to Settings → General → Software Update → Automatic Updates. To turn off automatic download of app updates, then go to Settings → App Store, where in the Automatic Downloads category disable App Updates.
