The start of the macOS operating system, for example, is really fast compared to the competing Windows. We owe this, of course, to the fast SSD drives, in any case, the start is really fast. But what can reduce the start speed a little are applications that are automatically turned on when you start your Mac or MacBook. Sometimes these are applications that you use and are happy to sacrifice those few extra seconds, but we often find that these are applications that we don't really need when starting the operating system. These then slow down the very process of "starting" the computer and are unnecessary - both on macOS and on the competing Windows. So let's see how to easily determine in macOS which applications are automatically turned on at system startup and which are not.

How to determine which applications start at system startup

  • Click in the upper left corner of the screen apple icon
  • We will select an option System Preferences…
  • Let's open a category Users and groups (lower left part of the window)
  • From the left menu, we switch to our user profile (mostly we switch to it automatically)
  • In the top menu, select Login
  • Now at the bottom we click on lock and we authorize ourselves with the password
  • Now we can choose which applications we want after startup by ticking them hide
  • If we want to turn off their loading completely, we choose below the table minus icon
  • If we want a specific application to start automatically when logging in, we click on plus icon and we will add it

As I like the system to start quickly, both in the case of macOS and in the case of a Windows computer, I am glad that we have the option to choose which applications turn on at startup and which do not. Personally, I leave only the most important applications on and the applications that I use immediately after starting the computer - ie. for example, Spotify, Magnet, etc. The other applications are useless to me, because I don't use them much and when I really need them, I turn them on manually.
