In 2013, Apple changed the naming system of its operating systems, moving from felines to the names of various natural monuments and places of interest in California. For six years now, Mac owners have been looking at beautiful photos from the Californian landscape that accompany a specific version of macOS, after which it is also named. YouTuber Andrew Lewitt and his friends decided to try to replicate Apple's iconic wallpapers. And as it turns out, it's almost impossible.

First of all, in several cases it was a problem to find the place as such. Massifs like El Capitan or Half Dome are by their very nature unmissable, but finding the right angle that matches the original Apple photo as closely as possible is not easy at all. In the same way, it was impossible to hit the same composition, firstly because of the need to hit the right period, secondly because the original photos from Apple are modified to a large extent in Photoshop, and in the real world, it is not always possible to make their exact copies.

Snapshots versus Apple wallpapers:

The interesting thing about hunting for the right locations and compositions is that all the places are relatively close to each other. The group around Andrew managed to take all the photos used since 2013 in a week. They filmed the entire trip and edited an interesting video from it, which shows not only how complex the process of taking pictures and finding the right composition actually is, but also how breathtaking nature Californians can enjoy.
