The new iOS 13 is currently only available to registered developers. A public beta for testers will be available during the summer, and regular users won't see the new system until the fall. However, there is an unofficial way to install iOS 13 right now. This year, however, Apple made the whole process much more complicated, and the following procedure is therefore intended for more experienced users.

The biggest obstacle is the absence of a configuration profile that could easily be added to the iPhone and then the beta downloaded via OTA (over-the-air), i.e. classically in the settings as a regular update. Thus, for the first time in several years, Apple has made available to developers only IPSW system files for individual devices, which must also be installed via the Finder in the new macOS 10.15, or via iTunes on an older version of the system. In the case of the second variant mentioned, however, it is still necessary to download and install the beta version of Xcode 11.

The above suggests that you will not need a Mac to install the new iOS 13. Unfortunately, iTunes on Windows is not supported and there is currently no other way to install the system on an iPhone or iPod. The same limitations also apply in the case of the new iPadOS.

What you will need:

iOS 13 for individual devices:

How to install iOS 13

  • Download the IPSW file
  • Connect iPhone/iPod to Mac with a cable
  • Open iTunes (macOS 10.14 + Xcode 11) or Finder (macOS 10.15)
  • Locate iPhone (top left icon in iTunes, sidebar in Finder)
  • Hold the key option (alt) and click on Check for updates
  • Select the downloaded IPSW file from the menu and select Open
  • Confirm the update and then go through the entire process

Warning:

Please note that the first beta version of the system may not be stable. Before installation, we strongly recommend that you make a backup (ideally through iTunes) so that in case of any problem, you can restore from the backup at any time and go back to a stable system. Only more experienced users should install iOS 13, who know how to downgrade if necessary and can help themselves when the system crashes. The editors of Jablíčkář magazine are not responsible for the instructions, so you install the system at your own risk.
