Are you one of those users who store the vast majority of files on their desktop? Then you're sure to love the new Sets feature in macOS Mojave. It is designed to neatly group files and free you from clutter on your desktop. So let's show you how to activate the Sets, use them and what all it has to offer.

Function activation

By default, the feature is disabled. There are three different ways to turn it on, and to make our tutorial comprehensive, let's list them all:

  • Method one: Right-click on the desktop and select Use sets.
  • Method two: On the desktop, select in the top row Display -> Use sets.
  • Method three: Go to the desktop and use the keyboard shortcut command + control + 0 (zero).

Arrangement of sets

Sets are organized by file type by default. You can change their order and group files by date (last opened, added, changed, or created) and tag. To change the set grouping, do the following:

  • Method one: Right-click on the desktop and select Group sets by –> select from the list.
  • Method two: On the desktop, select in the top row Display -> Group sets by –> select from the list.
  • Method three: Go to desktop and use one of the keyboard shortcuts:
    • command + control + (by type)
    • command + control + (according to date of last opening)
    • command + control + (by date added)
    • command + control + (according to the date of change)
    • command + control +(by brands)

Tags are best sorted in sets because they are user configurable and colors can be used to identify certain types of files. This way you can easily find files related to a certain topic.

Other set options:

  • To open all sets at once, click on one of them together with the key option.
  • You can easily store sets in folders. Just right-click on the set, choose New folder with selection and then name it.
  • In the same way, you can bulk rename, share, compress, send, edit, create a PDF from the files in a set, and much more. Basically, you have all the same organizational options that you would choose in any group of files on the desktop, but without the need for manual selection.
