Each version of the macOS operating system carries with it a unique name, with which Apple refers to the beautiful places located in the American state of California. So far, we have had the opportunity to work with Mavericks, Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, High Sierra, Mojave, Catalina and last year's Big Sur, all of which refer to locations of the same name. But what could the upcoming version of macOS 12 be called? There are currently two hot candidates in the running.

Every year, apple lovers speculate about what name Apple will rush with in a given year. It should be noted, however, that guessing the name is not exactly a twice-difficult task, as the giant from Cupertino leaves quite significant traces behind. Every name is registered as a trademark. The company registered several different names in this way between 2013 and 2014, many of which it subsequently used. Specifically, they were Yosemite, Sierra, El Capitan and Big Sur. By the way, the giant registered these names at once. On the other hand, names like Diablo, Condor, Tiburon, Farallon and many others were dropped on April 26 of this year.

With that, we can theoretically say that we are left with only two candidates for which Apple has recently renewed the trademark. Namely, it is about Mammoth a Monterey. The first variant was even renewed only on April 29, 2021, and is therefore the most up-to-date name that the company now has. The designation would most likely refer to Mammoth Lakes Resort, located near California's Sierra Mountains, not far from Yosemite National Park. If Apple is preparing a massive macOS update for us with a lot of new features, then there is a high chance that it will carry the label Mammoth.

Name Monterey it was renewed earlier, specifically on December 29, 2020. Apple could also decide on this naming for several reasons. For example, the Big Sur region extends partially into Monterey, and it's no secret that Apple loves these light links. This is evidenced by earlier versions of Sierra and High Sierra, or Yosemite and El Capitan. In addition, the mentioned name Monterey coincidentally already appeared at the earlier WWDC 2015 conference. When Craig Federighi presented iPad multitasking, he was planning a trip to quite interesting areas of California - to Monterey and Big Sur. If the next version of macOS is just a light extension of Big Sur, it is more likely that it will be called this.
