Apple's sophisticated product ecosystem is one of the reasons why it pays to own multiple devices from the company. They communicate with each other in an exemplary manner and save your time when you need it. Using the Personal Hotspot feature on your iPhone, you can easily share your Internet connection with your Mac, wherever you are. Moreover, without unnecessary questions and confirmation.

Personal hotspot and turning it on

If you travel from places covered by a Wi-Fi signal but need to connect to the Internet on your MacBook, or if your provider simply does not offer such a fast connection, while the mobile operator's is faster, there is a way to "send" the connection from your iPhone to your Mac.

  • Open on iPhone Settings.
  • Choose Personal hotspot.
  • Turn on the option Allow others to connect.

If you want, you can also define a Wi-Fi password here. The name of the connection then depends on the naming of your device. To change it, go to Settings -> In general -> Information -> Name. Even though the Personal Hotspot menu is directly in Settings, you can find the same menu after clicking on the Mobile Data -> Personal Hotspot menu. Both are identical and what you do in one will be reflected in the other.

Family sharing and automation

If you use Family Sharing, you can share your hotspot with any member of your family. Moreover, it is completely automatic, or after it asks you for approval. You choose the behavior of this in Settings -> Personal hotspot -> Family sharing. If you set it to automatic, family sharing members will be able to use your hotspot without unnecessary permissions.

That's the power of connecting to your device on a Mac, after all. Whenever it searches for a Wi-Fi network and doesn't find one, it will automatically offer you to connect to a hotspot. So you can start working immediately without unnecessary network searches. This feature is called Instant hotspot. The only condition is to log in with the same Apple ID. Of course, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth must be turned on on both devices. As long as the Mac is connected to the hotspot, you will see an icon of two connected ellipses in the menu bar instead of the classic symbol. If you need to connect to the hotspot manually, just click on the Wi-Fi icon in the status bar, where you will already see the name of your iPhone, which you just have to select. You can also connect your iPhone to your Mac with a cable for a more stable connection, but of course it's not as elegant. The menu for this in macOS Catalina and older can be found in System Preferences -> Sew, in newer macOS v System Preferences -> Sharing -> Internet sharing.
