Battery life is one of the most important features of today's smartphones. Of course, iPhones are no exception in this regard, while the truth unfortunately remains that they are not at their best at the same time. With age and use, the capacity decreases, resulting in a shorter lifespan. But can it be improved in any way? Several practical tips that we have prepared in cooperation with Český Servis can help you in this direction.

Use up-to-date software

You should definitely not overlook the operating system version. Even Apple itself recommends that you always use the most up-to-date system to increase endurance. It not only brings with it various gadgets or security patches, but often also optimizes energy consumption, which can positively affect the endurance itself. It can also be the other way around, when some version "squeezes" the battery a little more. The manufacturer is trying to correct the mentioned shortcomings as quickly as possible, and therefore it is appropriate not to overlook these updates

Low battery mode

There is a great feature within the iOS operating system called Low Battery Mode. As the label itself suggests, this mode can significantly save the iPhone's battery, for several reasons. Specifically, it limits e-mail downloads in the background, application updates, automatic downloads, reduces the time for automatic screen locking to 30 seconds, suspends the synchronization of photos on iCloud, and switches mobile network reception from 5G to slightly more economical LTE.

Its activation is understandably simple. All you have to do is go to Settings > Battery and slide the slider next to Low Power Mode. At the same time, you can access the mode activation via the Control Center. But if you don't see the corresponding icon here, you can add it to other control elements in Settings > Control Center.

Leave auto-brightness enabled

The display has a direct influence on the battery life, mainly the level of its brightness and also the time of active use. Unfortunately, some people make the rather schoolboy mistake of keeping the display brightness at maximum even in darker areas, thereby draining the battery unnecessarily. For this reason, iPhones are equipped with an automatic brightness adjustment feature.

In such cases, it is adjusted based on the surrounding light conditions, which can help save battery and your eyes. In addition, activation is extremely simple. Only in Settings go to category Disclosure, go to Display and text size, where you will find the option at the very bottom Auto brightness. Automatic brightness goes hand in hand with the True Tone function, which ensures a more natural color rendering. You then activate it in Settings > Display and brightness.

Dark mode for iPhones with an OLED display

If you own an iPhone with an OLED display, you should definitely know that using dark mode can significantly increase your battery life. It is with this type of screens that black is displayed simply by turning off the given pixels, thanks to which the panel does not consume as much energy. Namely, these are the iPhone X, XS (Max), 11 Pro (Max), 12 (mini) and 12 Pro (Max).

You can activate dark mode in Settings > Display and brightness. At the same time, the possibility of automatic switching between light and dark mode is offered, either based on your own schedule or according to dawn and dusk.

Do not expose iPhone to extreme temperatures

Extreme temperatures also have a significant effect on the battery itself, which can fundamentally affect its durability. According to the manufacturer's official sources, mobile devices (iPhone and iPad) work best in an environment with temperatures ranging from 0 °C to 35 °C. Especially higher temperatures can irreversibly damage the aforementioned battery and significantly reduce its capacity. You should take into account the risk of device overheating especially in the summer months. In an instant, you can forget your phone in direct sunlight, for example, and thus expose it to the extreme temperatures just mentioned.

Don't be an unnecessary display

iPhones already have a feature called Lift to Wake enabled by default. Thanks to it, the display is always automatically activated when you just pick up the phone, which can of course be extremely practical and speeding up. Unfortunately, it also has its dark side. In some cases, the phone's display can light up unnecessarily without you really needing it. This, of course, requires some energy. To save it, simply turn off the function - again in Settings > Display and brightness.

Check the consumption of individual applications

The applications themselves are largely responsible for the increased energy consumption, or the intensity of their use. Fortunately, within the iOS operating system (i.e. iPadOS) it is very easy to find out which app is the biggest "guzzler." Simply open Settings, go to category Battery and scroll down to the section Application usage. Now you can clearly see in one place what percentage of the battery was taken by which application/function. Accordingly, you can possibly limit the given programs and thus also save the battery.

Disable automatic app updates

So-called automatic app updates can also be responsible for rapid battery drain. In practice, it works so that as soon as an update is available for an app, it is automatically downloaded and installed in the background, so you don't have to deal with anything afterwards. Although it sounds great, it is again necessary to take into account increased consumption.

Fortunately, these automatic app updates can be turned off relatively easily. Another advantage is that you can filter the applications for which you wish to keep automatic updates. Everything can be solved in Settings > General > Background Updates.

Restrict access to location services

The so-called location services, with which various applications can work, are a big consumer of energy. You can find out which "apps" work this way in Settings > Privacy > Location services, where you can also disable or enable them. Not every application needs this option for proper function, so it is advisable to disable it. At the same time, the issue of user privacy is solved.

Disabling animations can also help

The iOS operating system offers several animations that make working on the device much more pleasant from a design point of view. Although it looks great "on paper" or on newer models, for older iPhones these animations can be rather a pain in the ass. It is animations that can be responsible for significantly lower performance and a possible decrease in battery life. Fortunately, they can again be deactivated relatively easily, in Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Restrict Motion.

Optimizing iPhone battery charging

Apple phones are also equipped with a great feature that helps slow battery aging by limiting the amount of time the device is in a fully charged state. Specifically, the gadget uses machine learning capabilities, thanks to which it analyzes the user's daily routine and adapts charging accordingly. In practice, it looks quite simple. For example, if you put your iPhone on the charger at night, the charge will pause at 80% until you actually need the phone. Just before you wake up, the battery will be topped up to 100%.

The function can be activated in Settings > Battery > Battery health, where you only need to activate the Optimized charging option at the bottom. With this simple step, you can effectively prevent excessive wear of the flashlight itself and thus extend its life.

When even tips are not enough or time to change the battery

Of course, the battery ages over time, due to which the original capacity is reduced. After all, you can check this yourself directly in Settings > Battery > Battery condition, where you can immediately see what the current battery capacity is expressed as a percentage in relation to the original capacity. When this value approaches the 80% mark, it means only one thing - time to replace the battery. It is the lower capacity that causes reduced endurance, which can also limit performance. But how to proceed in such a case?

You should always leave your phone in the hands of professionals who can replace the battery in a matter of minutes. In our region, he is renowned as the absolute number one Czech Service.
