If we work with the Dock on the Mac, in the vast majority of cases we use clicking, dragging, the Drag & Drop function or gestures on the trackpad or on the Magic Mouse. But you can also control the Dock in the macOS operating system with the help of keyboard shortcuts, which we will introduce in today's article.

General Abbreviations

As with other applications and functions in the macOS operating system, there are generally applicable shortcuts for the Dock. For example, if you want to minimize the active window to the Dock, use the key combination Cmd + M. To hide or show the Dock again, use the keyboard shortcut Option (Alt) + Cmd + D, and if you want to open the Dock preferences menu, right-click on the Dock divider and in the menu that appears, choose Dock Preferences. To move to the Dock environment, use the keyboard shortcut Control + F3.

Working with the Dock and Finder

If you've selected an item in the Finder that you'd like to move to the Dock, just highlight it with a mouse click and then press the keyboard shortcut Control + Shift + Command + T. The selected item will then appear on the right side of the Dock. If you want to display a menu with additional options for a selected item in the Dock, click on this item with the left mouse button while holding down the Control key, or choose the good old right-click. If you want to display alternative items in the menu for a given application, first display the menu as such and then press the Option (Alt) key.

Additional keyboard shortcuts and gestures for the Dock

If you need to resize the Dock, place your mouse cursor on the divider and wait until it changes to a double arrow. Then click, and then you can easily resize the Dock by moving your mouse cursor or trackpad.
