Unfortunately, current events are not good for movie lovers, an early return to cinemas is not in sight, so domestic cinemas are becoming more and more popular. Most people decide to buy a large screen TV and after installation, they are disappointed that the effect is not quite what they expected. It's simple, manufacturers are making TVs bigger and bigger, but at the same time making them thinner. They are more interesting in terms of design, but when it comes to sound, small speakers simply cannot sound good and loudly at the same time. What follows is a feeling of disappointment, the sound goes full blast, but it is of poor quality and you hear it everywhere, except on the sofa, where you want to enjoy the best feeling...

It's time for a home theater…

Thanks to the home cinema, you will get significantly better and better sound quality, which makes the resulting overall impression incomparable to the one that only the sound of the TV will give you. A home theater consists of several speakers and an amplifier. Your goal is to achieve surround sound. Home theater audio setups achieve this by using physically spaced speakers. We can usually meet the designations 5.1 and 7.1. The number before the dot indicates the number of speakers in the system and the number after the dot indicates the presence of a subwoofer. In the case of a 5.1 configuration system, we find three speakers in the front (right, left and center) and two in the back (right and left). 7.1 systems add two more side speakers. It is not surprising that such a system is able to reliably reproduce surround sound.

And if you have a modern receiver at home that supports DOLBY ATMOS® or DTS:X®, it is possible to use speakers in combinations of 5.1.2, 7.1.2 or 16 channels 9.2.4, where at the end of the formula you will find the number of atmospheric speakers. How to get dolby from the TV and, for example, the HDR format to the projector? It is also important to have a suitably chosen chain from the player to the display unit.

Is the subwoofer important?

The presence of a subwoofer has a fundamental effect on the sound performance of the entire set. This type of speaker takes care of sound reproduction in the lowest values of the audible spectrum – typically 20-200 Hz. For a movie or music, it's bass instruments, explosions, rumbling engines, beats and others. The subwoofer gives the sound not only impact, but also dynamics to each individual speaker.

How much will it cost?

As for the sound itself, it is a simple equation, the more I invest in the cinema, the higher the quality I get and the resulting sound will be more faithful, more realistic, less distorted. It is important to answer the following questions:

  • How often will I use the home cinema to watch?
  • How demanding / experienced am I?
  • How big is the room where I will watch the cinema?
  • What source will the TV signal come from?
  • What is my budget?

We have therefore divided the reports into the following categories:

Up to CZK 50

You can get affordable home theater sets from the lower tens of thousands of crowns, they are low-performance sets with low sound quality. Mostly already in the form of 5+1 and they are easy to install.

This category also includes a relatively new audio solution called Soundbar. For the novice listener, they are sufficient and without a doubt better than the integrated speakers of TVs. There are also more expensive ones that evoke surround sound. Although the soundbar is located in front of the TV, its individual speakers are directed so that they reach the viewer from different sides.

Above 50 CZK

Here we are approaching the perfect experience. The TV (or DVD, or whatever) signal goes to the amplifier and from there the sound is distributed to the speakers. As we said at the beginning, the more we invest in speakers, the more perfect sound we get. In this price range, automatically expect perfectly clear sound with a surround effect. You should evaluate the quality of your player, which should handle your favorite media (CD, DVD, Blu-ray, hard disk). In this category, you should always be able to listen to a given set and ideally compare it to another. Know what standard of sound quality you are buying and whether something else is right for you. Don't be afraid to come and try out the lineup more than once, and maybe even with family members. At the showroom, they should advise you on the connection method and the type of cabling.

Top solution

For the more undemanding clients, the services of the prestigious Prague showroom are available VOIX, which prepares home theaters directly to measure. In such a situation, the customer designs his own equipment based on preferences, space and other important factors, which he negotiates directly with the staff. Of course, the purchase is preceded by a detailed interview in which several matters must be clarified. Of course, the most important thing is the space you have reserved for the home theater and whether there are windows. Insulation is also an important aspect. Will the room then be isolated from other rooms so that, for example, there is no disturbance to the family or household?

As for the resulting sound quality, it is extremely important to perform the so-called acoustic measurement of the room. Of course, this step can be omitted, but it is simply necessary to achieve an excellent result. Based on the measured frequencies and acoustic values, a proposal is then made to modify the room so that it offers first-class acoustics. Aesthetic, acoustic plasterboard or other acoustic cladding can help with this. In any case, the customer always has the main say in this, who, depending on the idea, can discuss the whole situation with the Cinema Designer. However, it's not all about sound. The cinema is a social affair, and it is therefore appropriate to discuss the number of seats, the distance from the projection and the like. A comfortable place to sit is the alpha and omega of every cinema, including the home one.

Lighting decoration is naturally related to this. This is another necessary part of the room, with the help of which we can suddenly turn the room with a home cinema into a relaxation room mode. Of course, the most important part of the whole puzzle must not be missing - a high-quality TV or projection screen surface. This is precisely why it is necessary to discuss the options for the type of projection technique, correctly calculate the diagonal, or take into account the distance and viewing angles. Finally, it must also be decided from which source the customer watches movies most often. This needs to be taken into account when choosing other techniques for maximum enjoyment.
