Whenever you see a spinning colored wheel on your Mac screen, it almost always means that OS X is running low on RAM. By increasing the RAM, it can greatly help your MacBook in terms of performance. Especially if you use more demanding applications like Logic Pro, Aperture, Photoshop or Final Cut. 8 GB of RAM is almost mandatory. Apple equips its laptops with 4 GB of RAM as standard. It is possible to configure your computer, but the increase will be significantly more expensive than if you replace the memory yourself.
You don't need to be a technical type, changing the RAM is one of the easiest MacBook modifications (and some repair shops are happy to charge 500-1000 crowns for the work only). It should be added that the RAM is replaceable only on the Pro models, MacBook Air and Pro with Retina do not allow this modification. We performed the exchange on a Mid-2010 model, but the procedure should be the same for newer models.
To exchange you will need:
- A small screwdriver, ideally a Phillips #00, which can be purchased for 70-100 CZK, but watchmakers' screwdrivers can also be used.
- Spare RAM (8 GB costs about 1000 CZK). Make sure the RAM has the same frequency as your Mac. You can find out the frequency by clicking on the apple > About this Mac. Note that each MacBook supports a different maximum amount of RAM.
Note: Computer component vendors typically label RAM specifically for MacBooks.
Replacing the RAM
- Turn off the computer and disconnect the MagSafe connector.
- On the back, you will need to unscrew all the screws (the 13″ version has 8). A few of the screws will be different lengths, so remember which ones they are. If you don't want to fumble during subsequent assembly, draw the location of the screws on office paper and press them into the given positions.
- After unscrewing the screws, simply remove the lid. The RAM is located just below the battery.
- The RAM memories are held in two rows by two thumbtacks, which need to be slightly unclipped. After unzipping, the memory pops up. Remove the RAM and insert the new memory into the slots in the same way. Then gently press them back to return to their original position
- Done. Now just screw the screws back and turn on the computer. About this Mac should now show the installed memory value.
Note: You perform the RAM exchange at your own risk, the Jablíčkář.cz editorial team is not responsible for any damages.
Well, I wouldn't risk it without removing the battery.
I have personally changed memories and other components in dozens of MacBooks, always without disconnecting the battery and without problems.
absolutely pointless, but if you want the macbook to be really turned off, I recommend turning it off classically
But you have to be careful because I changed the RAM in a year-old MBP and I almost destroyed the head of the screw and I also had a special Phillips screwdriver. And that's why I went to the service center to inform you that if the head is destroyed and you have a screw in the MBP, drilling and new screws cost 60 Euros (CZK 1). Apparently it's the official price from Apple.
thanks, instructions on how to get rid of those ds_store and thumbail or what are they, wouldn't it be found? I need it when someone brings me a USB, I always give them a lot of mess...
CleanMyMac solves this for me
But if CleanMyMac does not enable vim while it is running (it has to start, scan, clean...), in my opinion BlueHarvest from fy is more suitable.
zeroonetwenty, which is designed for exactly this.
download/buy totalfinder, it's a modified Finder in which you can turn this off :) it's from a Czech programmer and the price is not dizzying
Somewhat simplified instructions, which may not always turn out well... Hopefully the author will pay you the damages :)
And what exactly are you missing there? Of course, the battery can still be disconnected, but I replaced the RAM in the way described above without any problems.
E.g. there is no mention of ESD in the article
the entire macbook is made of aluminum, which is connected to the frame - ground. It's probably clear that if I manipulate it, I'll probably run out and be careful, it doesn't even have to be connected to the network...
I want to ask, is it possible to replace the battery in a Macbook Air 13 mid-12? Thank you
goes
Have any of you changed the RAM to a 17" MBP Late 2008?
What about the warranty after the replacement?
you do not lose the warranty, Apple does not ban these upgrades
I graduated about half a year ago. It went beautifully without any problems with a set of about 20 micro screwdrivers from a hypermarket for CZK 80, and the Kingstons work as they should.
I would just like to remind you that before you reach into the bowels of the MB, "discharge" any static charge.
Please advise… I have a macbook white mid2010, I have already added to 4GB RAM but I would need more. Mainly because of GarageBand, which I use to record demos for the band. I use vst plugins and T-racks effects, so it is very memory intensive and some recordings are almost impossible to work with.
Is it possible to increase the RAM on the macbook white or is 4 GB already the maximum? Thanks.
I assume it's a MacBook 7.1, unofficially you can add up to 8GB
absolutely maximum comfort. question max 5 minutes. it is necessary to find out the necessary findings in advance of course. i.e. how many slots we have, how they are occupied and what frequency and type. then it is necessary to look at what screwdriver I will need for uncovering. all this can be done in advance and the exchange itself is already a breeze. as well as disk replacement. the only catch is that you need a TORX screwdriver, usually marked T06.
and it can be bought in GES, GME, etc. for a few bucks... so it's also convenient...
So my macbook seems slow and when I checked the RAM it showed me 2gb, after about three days my macbook stopped working. I was surprised and when I bought it I should have had 4GB. So I figured the error would be in the RAM. I took it out and plugged it in and the macbook went down
Normally, but now after about a week it doesn't work for me again. Don't know what the problem could be? Thanks
it will be a bad memory or board. I don't see it as a faulty controller, that would be a broken whole CPU (I assume you have a core Ix processor)
nice instructions, it wouldn't be a problem to do something like this for the iMac as well, specifically, I would need to add two RAMs to the 2009 model and I still haven't found out how :D You would be very helpful
A good guide for newbies, there are a few on the "Apple" sites, but for users who have an older machine, certainly very useful. I'll just add that I changed the RAM 2x and never drained the battery and everything was fine, the same when changing the disk. I will add one experience - if you need to run Windows on a MacBook, e.g. via Parallels Desktop, then even 4GB of memory is woefully insufficient, so I always recommend at least 8GB.
I would like to ask if I have a Max amount of 8gb
Amount of slots 2
This means that I can have a maximum of 8gb frames (2x4gb) or I can put an 8gb frame in each slot (2x8gb)
Year of manufacture October 2011
Hello, I want to ask if it is possible to replace the ram on the Macbook air 13″ 2017?
Not.
