How to backup and then restore all SMS and iMessages without backing up and restoring everything on your iPhone? Such a procedure will come in handy if you want to install a clean iOS operating system, but want to transfer messages from the old one.

For the whole event you will need a computer with iTunes installed, a cable to connect to the device and the iBackupBot application, which you can download for free from this link.

1 step

Connect the iPhone that contains the messages you want to transfer separately to another iPhone to a computer with iTunes installed. Next, click on the icon with the device and in the section Advances choose This computer. It is necessary to make sure that you do not have the option checked Encrypt iPhone backups. If not, tap on Back up. After the backup is complete, disconnect the iPhone.

If you are going to transfer the backup or the messages to your "old" iPhone and want to start from scratch, reset the device to factory settings after the backup. However, if you want to transfer the content to a completely new iPhone, follow the instructions to set up the new device until you get to the home screen successfully.

2 step

Connect the iPhone you want to upload messages to your computer and open iTunes. Practice the same procedures as in the case of the previous point, but after the backup, do not disconnect the iPhone and leave it connected with iTunes open.

3 step

Run iBackupBot and in the section backups select the newly created backup. Click the small triangle icon to the left of your backup name and click on User Information Manager.

4 step

Click the section Messages and press the button Import. There is a chance that you will be asked if you want to select a backup to import from. If it does, select the device backup you created based on the instructions in the first step and press OK.

5 step

Click the button OK in window Import Messages and then in the window Import File, which appears, uncheck it Do this for all conflicts and press the button Yes.

6 step

Press the button OK, which confirms that all messages and attachments have been associated with the backup. Then close iBackupBot and go back to iTunes, where you click the button Restore from backup, select the same backup you created in the previous steps and press the button Restore. In this way, you will receive a backup of the original iOS installation on the target iPhone, which is enriched with SMS that were added to it using the iBackupBot application.

7 step

Once the backup restore is complete, open the Messages app on your iPhone to ensure that all messages (including attachments, if any existed at the time of the backup) were successfully transferred.

You may also need to restore your contacts using iCloud or another service so that the messages correspond with the correct names.
