Parental controls are part of OS X and will be welcomed by any parent who doesn't want their son to spend most of the day/night playing computer games or their daughter surfing social media. The parental control settings are located in the system preferences, and within a few minutes you can easily set which activities your child will be prohibited from, or at what time of day.

After open Parental supervision we will be shown a menu asking if we want to create an account with parental control or transfer an existing account to it. As an illustrative example, I created an account for my daughter to use. We will set the name, account name and password. After confirmation, we will see 5 tabs – Application, Web, People, Time Limits and Other.

Application

We will set up first Application. In this tab, we can choose whether our daughter or son will use the full or simplified Finder. A simplified Finder means that files and documents cannot be deleted or renamed, but only opened. At the same time, the simplified interface is suitable for beginners who are using OS X for the first time. In the next step, we can set the age limit for downloaded applications. If the application is then recommended for a higher age than it is set, it will not be downloaded. Next, in the list, we check which installed applications your little user is allowed to use. Permission to change the dock is self-explanatory.

Website

Under the tab Website as expected, we find the option to block access to certain web addresses. When we don't allow unrestricted access to websites, it's up to us to allow and block websites. Under the button Own the list of allowed and forbidden sites is hidden. It is also possible to restrict access in such a way that only the websites you select can be opened.

Lide

Bookmark Lide is in charge of banning multiplayer games through Game Center, adding new friends in Game Center, limiting Mail and Messages. As an example, I used a limit for messages to one specific user. The same goes for Mail. In addition, mail restriction allows you to send to our email address a request to exchange mail with a contact who is not on the approved list.

Time constraints

We're getting to the "spends hours on the computer" point. Settings in the tab Time constraints will allow the parent to limit the use of the computer for a certain time. For example, we allow 3 and a half hours a day on weekdays. After this time, the user will not be able to use the computer anymore and will have to turn it off. During the day on the weekend, our user is not limited by time, but it will be his turn in the evening Convenience store, which prevents the use of the computer from a certain late hour until the early hours of the morning.

jine

The last setting is a brief restriction on dictation on the preferences panel, display of profanity in the dictionary, printer management, CD/DVD burning or password change.

Parental control is now set and our children can start using their account. Finally, I would add the option of displaying logs in which the user's activity is listed. Logs can be accessed from the first three tabs.
