Google Maps on iOS, whether as a pre-installed app or standalone in the App Store, has always lacked the ability to download maps for offline viewing. The Android version had this feature, but it also disappeared with the new update. Fortunately, not quite and it is also hidden in iOS devices:

  • Zoom in on the iPhone or iPad maps to the location you want to save for offline viewing
  • Click in the search field, type "ok maps" without quotes and confirm with the search button. This command, by the way, is strikingly similar to the commands for Google Glass.
  • The selected part of the map will be cached in the application and will be available even in the absence of an Internet connection.

It's hard to say why Google kept offline mode so mysterious and whether it intends to support the offline browsing feature in the future, but at least it's available now.
