Apple offers a bunch of native apps in all of its operating systems, including an email client called Mail. Most users are comfortable with this client, but then there are those individuals who lack the basic functions of Mail. As for alternative applications, there are countless of them - for example, Outlook from Microsoft, or maybe Spark and a bunch of others. If you install an e-mail client, you must tell the system this information and set it as the default. If you do not do so, all actions related to e-mail will continue to take place in Mail - for example, clicking on an e-mail address to quickly write a message. In this article, we will look at how to change the default mail application in macOS.

How to Change the Default Mail App on Mac

If you want to change the default email client on your macOS device, it is not difficult. Proceed as follows:

  • First, you need to run the native application one last time Mail
  • Once you've done so and the app loads, tap the bold tab in the top bar Mail
  • This will open a drop-down menu in which you can find and click the option Preferences…
  • A new window will then open with the available Mail application preferences.
  • In the top menu of this window, make sure you are in the section In general.
  • Here, you just need to click in the upper part menu next to the option Default email reader.
  • Finally, choose from the menu the desired mail application, which you want to use as default.

Unfortunately, in macOS, after installing a new mail client, you will not see a window with which you could quickly set it as the default. Unfortunately, many users have no idea how to change the default email client. If you make the changes, in all cases where the native mail would be opened to perform an action related to mail, the application you selected will now be opened. Finally, don't forget to close Mail completely so that you don't get double notifications, and if necessary, make sure that you don't have the application in the list of applications that start automatically after logging in.
