Absolutely all parts and things wear out over time - some more and some less. There is probably no need to remind you that portable devices experience the greatest wear and tear on the battery, which, among other things, is considered a consumer product. In the same way, albeit much more slowly, other components, including the SSD disk, display and others, gradually wear out. As for disks, their general health is determined by several different values, for example in the form of bad sectors, operating time or the number of data read and written. If you would like to find out how the health of your Mac's disk is, or if you are just interested in how much data your disk has already read and written, then you have come to the right place.

How to find out on a Mac how much data has been read and written by its SSD

If you want to know more about the health of your Mac's drive, along with other interesting information related to it, it's not difficult. Of course, you will have to use a third-party application for this, specifically called DriveDx. This app is available to try for 14 days, which is more than enough for our purposes. So proceed as follows:

  • First, you need to download the mentioned application DriveDx – just tap <a href="https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1932/8043/files/200721_ODSTOUPENI_BEZ_UDANI_DUVODU__EN.pdf?v=1595428404" data-gt-href-en="https://en.notsofunnyany.com/">here</a>.
  • This will take you to the app's developer page, where you can click on the top right Free Download.
  • Immediately after that, the application will start downloading, which you can move to a folder Application.
  • Once you've done that, double-tap the app run.
  • After the first launch, a window will appear, in which at the bottom click on Try Now.
  • A notification for automatic updates will then appear within the application, where you can choose No.
  • Now you are in left menu find yours disc, for which you want to find out the number of data read and written.
  • Once found under this drive, click on the tab Health Indicators.
  • Once you do so, it will appear all information about the health of your disk.
  • Find the column in this data Data Units Read (reading) a Data Units Write (registration).
  • Next to these boxes you in the column raw value you can view how much data has already been read or written.

As I mentioned above, the DriveDx application is not strictly intended only to tell you how much data has already passed through a particular SSD. In general, this application is intended to protect you from data loss that could occur due to age and disk overload. Within DriveDx, each item that determines the health of a drive has a percentage. All of these percentages are then averaged to determine overall health. You can view this later when you click directly on the name of the disc in the left menu, specifically in the box Overall Health Rating.
