Are you one of those individuals who are dedicated to repairing Apple computers? Have you replaced the thermal paste on your Mac, or completed some other operation, and you want to know if everything is in order and the device is cooling properly? If you answered yes to at least one of these questions, then it might be useful for you to know the option that allows you to run a stress test on a Mac without the need to install any application. It takes care of the fact that all processor cores are maximally used, so you can find out whether everything works in the administration even under maximum load.

How to Run a Stress Test on a Mac

If you want to run a stress test on your Mac without the need to install a third-party application, then it is definitely not difficult. The entire procedure is carried out within the Terminal application, in which you only need to enter the correct command. To find out more, follow these steps:

  • So first you need to run the native app on your Mac Terminal.
    • You can find the terminal in Applications in the folder utilities, or you can start it with Spotlight.
  • As soon as you start the Terminal, a small window will open in which you can enter various commands.
  • Now it is necessary that you copied the command which I am attaching below:
yes > /dev/null &
  • After copying the command, move back to the window Terminal and command here insert
  • At the moment, however, no order yet do not confirm. If you confirm it, the load test will start on only one processor core. It is therefore necessary to find out how many processor cores do you have (see below), and paste the copied command as many times as you like.
  • So if you have 6-core processor, so the command is required in sequence insert six times. It will look like this:
yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null & yes > /dev/null &
  • Only when you have entered the command as many times as you have cores, then press Enter.
  • The stress test will then start immediately - of course the Mac will start to freeze as it devotes all its resources to the test.
  • As soon as you want end the stress test, then insert or type in the Terminal command below, which you confirm with the key Enter:
killall yes

If you are not sure how many cores the processor of your Apple computer has, or if you want to check this information, it is not difficult. First, you need to tap on in the upper left corner icon . Once you do so, a drop-down menu will appear, in which click on the first option About this Mac. Now a small window will appear where you can move to the bookmark in the top menu Overview. Here you can find information about cores by the line Processor.
