How to run a diagnostic test on a Mac

If you are among the curious and would like to at least roughly find out what might be wrong with your macOS device, you can use a special diagnostic test. Running it is not difficult at all, however, it is necessary to take into account that the procedure differs depending on whether you own a Mac with an Apple Silicon processor, i.e. M1, or whether you own a Mac with an Intel processor. Below you will find both methods, just choose the right one for you.

How to run a diagnostic test on Macs with Apple Silicon

  • First, you need your Mac with an Apple Silicon processor they turned off.
    • Just tap on  in the top left, then tap on Turn off…
  • After complete shutdown press and hold power button.
  • Hold the power button until it appears on the screen options before starting the system.
    • Specifically, it will appear here hard drive icon, together with gear wheel.
  • Then press the hotkey on this screen Command + D

How to run a diagnostic test on Intel Macs

  • First, you need your Mac with an Apple Silicon processor they turned off.
    • Just tap on  in the top left, then tap on Turn off…
  • After complete shutdown press power button.
  • Immediately after that, you must hold down on the keyboard button D.

After the diagnostic test…

Immediately after that, the diagnostics will start working. It will be displayed as soon as the action is finished possible errors (reference codes). If you encounter any errors, just go to special pages from Apple, which are dedicated to the mentioned errors. Just find your error here and see what could be wrong. If you want the whole test restart so press Command + R, otherwise tap at the bottom Restart or Turn off. To get more warranty information, make sure your Mac is connected to the Internet, then press Command + G
