This November, Apple introduced its very first processor from the Apple Silicon family - namely the M1 chip. This is not only a big step for the Californian giant, but also for developers and users. The biggest problem is in the applications - classic applications that are written for Intel cannot be run on the M1 due to the different architecture, and it is necessary to use the Rosetta 2 code translator. In addition, there have also been changes related to options before starting the operating system - for example you cannot get into macOS Recovery mode, where the startup disk can be repaired, in the classic way. So how to do it?

How to repair startup disk on Mac with M1

If you need to repair the startup disk on your macOS device, because, for example, you cannot get into the system, you must first go to macOS Recovery mode. On Intel-based computers, you could enter macOS Recovery mode by holding down Command + R when the device starts up, on M1 processors the process is as follows:

  • First, it is necessary that your Mac with M1 they turned off. So click on the top left  -> Turn Off…
  • Once you have done the above procedure, wait until the screen does not blacken.
  • After completely shutting down the Mac again turn on with the button, anyway button don't let go.
  • Hold the power button until it appears pre-launch options screen.
  • In this screen you need to tap on gear icon.
  • This will move you into the mode macOS Recovery, where you open Disk Utility.
  • In Disk Utility, then at the top left, click on Display.
  • After that, a drop-down menu will open in which you can choose Show all devices.
  • In the left menu, now click on your starter disc, with which you have a problem.
  • Once highlighted in the top toolbar, click on Rescue.
  • Another window will open in which click on Start and follow the instructions on the screen.
  • Once everything is done, finally tap on Complete.

If Disk Utility informs you that the disk has been repaired, then everything is done. You can restart the device in the classic way and see if it starts up fine. Otherwise, it will be necessary to perform other actions, in the worst case, quite possibly even a new installation of the entire system. Disk repair is useful if the macOS operating system cannot start after startup, or if you encounter other problems with the disk while working.
