If you connect an external monitor to your Mac or MacBook, you usually don't have to worry about anything. After a few seconds, the image expands, and all you have to do after connecting a new external monitor for the first time is to rearrange the monitors. Sometimes, however, it can happen that the image does not appear immediately, or that it is displayed incorrectly. In these cases, you can try unplugging the monitor and plugging it back in, but there is a much more gentle method that can help you if the monitor isn't working.

How to re-recognize monitors on Mac in case of failure

If you have problems connecting and recognizing external monitors on your Mac or MacBook, you can use the function to re-recognize all connected monitors. This procedure can easily solve many problems associated with external monitors. The procedure for recognizing monitors is as follows:

  • First, you need to tap on the Mac in the upper left corner icon .
  • Once you do so, select from the menu that appears System Preferences…
  • This will open a window where you will find all the sections for editing system preferences.
  • Within this window, you need to locate and click on the section Monitors.
  • Once you have done so, check the top menu that you are in the tab Monitor.
  • Now hold the key on the keyboard options, on some older devices Alt.
  • Hold the key and then tap the button in the lower right corner Recognize monitors.

Immediately after pressing this button, all connected monitors will flash. After reloading, everything should be fine. In case you were unable to solve the problem, then most likely the problem is not in the macOS system, but somewhere else.
