Despite the fact that fewer and fewer users use the Dock within macOS, it will most likely be a full-fledged part of it for several long years. Within the Dock, there are mainly applications that you can get quick access to. In addition, you can also store various files, folders or links to websites in it. You can of course rearrange the individual items in the Dock to suit you as much as possible. But from time to time you may find yourself in a situation where your Dock is full, or when you want to start with a clean slate. The good news is that it's very easy to restore the Mac Dock to its original layout.

How to restore the Dock to its original layout on a Mac

If you want to restore the lower Dock on your macOS device to its original layout, i.e. so that the icons are displayed in it the same way as when you first turned on your Mac or MacBook, it is not difficult. Just use the native Terminal application, in which the procedure is as follows:

  • First, you need to open the application on your Mac or MacBook Terminal.
    • You can run this application using spotlight, or you can find it in Applications in the folder Utilities.
  • After starting the Terminal, a small window will appear in which you can enter commands.
  • Now it is necessary that you copied command, which I am attaching below:
defaults delete com.apple.dock; killall dock
  • Once you have copied this command, insert do Terminal application windows.
  • Once inserted, you just need to press a key Enter.

Once you confirm the above command, the Dock will restart and then appear in the default view. So all the icons in it will be arranged according to how they are arranged on each new macOS device, or after a clean installation of macOS. The option to reset the layout of the Dock on Mac is useful if, for example, you have many different applications in it and want to start with a clean slate.
