With the arrival of macOS 11 Big Sur, we saw many changes, especially in terms of design. However, it should be noted that there have also been relatively many functional changes. We have already discussed most of them in our magazine, however Quick User Switching is largely neglected. As the name suggests, this function allows you to easily and quickly switch users, i.e. if one Apple computer is used by several people. Thanks to this, you do not have to log out or switch users in any other complicated way. You can place the button for quick user switching in the top bar or in the control center.
How to Enable Fast User Switching on Mac
If you want to activate fast user switching on your Mac with macOS 11 Big Sur and later, i.e. if you want to add the icon of this function to the top bar or to the control center, proceed as follows:
- First, you need to tap on in the upper left corner icon .
- Once you do so, a drop-down menu will appear, tap on System Preferences…
- A new window will open with all available sections for editing system preferences.
- In this window, locate and click on the section named Dock and menu bar.
- Here in the left menu, go down a piece below, specifically up to the category Other modules.
- Now click on the box in this category Quick user switching.
- Finally, all you have to do is choose where the button for Quick User Switching will appear.
- You can choose menu bar, control center, or of course both.
So, you can activate the feature for quick user switching using the above method. If you want to quickly switch between Mac or MacBook users after activation, all you have to do is click on the stick figure icon in the top bar or in the notification center. After that, simply select the user and click on them, and the Mac will immediately go to the user's profile.
There is one catch. There is a bug in that quick switch, which manifests itself in the way that the screen saver starts running at the most inopportune moment and cannot be turned off. It doesn't help that it is disabled in the settings, nor that you move the mouse, type. It just starts.
Apple support advised me not to use this feature until the patch is released, since then it has stopped. I registered in the discussions that more users have the same problem, but probably not all.
It did the same to me as Kamil writes. In addition to randomly starting the saver, it also happened to me that when I woke up from sleep, a black screen with the apple logo appeared and nothing else helped, only restarting the macbook. After reinstalling mac os, and using only one user, these problems disappeared. I have a MacBook Air M1.
