Even the latest version of iOS doesn't offer the rumored dark mode support. However, there is a method to at least dim the brightness below the minimum possible limit and thus achieve a partial replacement of this missing mode.

In iOS, we can find a filter deep in the settings Low light, which can be used to reduce the brightness below the minimum threshold that can normally be set in Control Center on iPhones and iPads. The display is then slightly darker than normal and is less straining on the eyes. Furthermore, you can adjust the brightness as desired. But always going deep into the settings to reduce the brightness is not very convenient.

Decrease the brightness by triple-clicking the Home button

It can be set to dim the device's display with a quick triple-click of the Home button. To do this, go to Settings > General > Disclosure, select an item Enlargement and activate it.

The screen will probably zoom in on you at that point or a magnifying glass will appear. You can get back to the normal view either by double-tapping with three fingers on the display or by triple-clicking with three fingers to open the context menu, choose Full screen zoom and move the slider to the left to return it to normal view.

To activate lower brightness, open the mentioned menu again by triple tapping with three fingers and select the option Choose Filter > Low Light. The display goes dark immediately. For the dimming feature to work with the triple click of the Home button, you need to activate it in Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut and choose Enlargement.

After that, it will be enough to reduce the minimum brightness limit by pressing the Home button three times. The problem with such a combination, however, may be that iOS systemically uses a double press of the Home button to invoke multitasking, so both functions partially clash. However, if you get used to it, you can use them all at once. Only when invoking multitasking, the response is slightly longer, because the system is waiting to see if there is a third press.

Decrease the brightness by tapping your fingers on the display

There is also an alternative solution where you don't have to go deep into the settings, but bypass the hardware button by software. IN Settings > General > Accessibility > Zoom you activate the function again Enlargement. Again, the same procedure as mentioned above applies if the screen gets closer to you.

By triple-tapping the display, you will then call up a menu in which you can choose Choose Filter > Low Light. The brightness will then switch below the normal iOS lower limit. To return to normal mode, triple-tap again on the display and in the menu Select Filter > None.

Some users may also see the advantage of this solution in the fact that next to the filter Low light iOS can also turn on the grayscale display via this menu, which can be useful at times.

Lowering the minimum brightness limit certainly does not bring a full-fledged night/dark mode to iOS, which many users were hoping for, but even lower brightness can be useful when working at night or in poor lighting conditions.
