Downloading videos from YouTube directly to your iPhone or iPad is a rather tricky matter that requires going through a possibly unnecessarily complicated procedure through the Documents application. However, there is also a much simpler way. It requires the Shortcuts application from Apple, one shortcut and you're done in a few seconds.

Shortcuts rushed to iPhones and iPads with the arrival of iOS 12, and it is actually an improved version of the Workflow application, which Apple bought two years ago. Shortcuts offers an almost unlimited number of options for creating various shortcuts to automate certain functions (for example, for HomeKit) or other tools that will facilitate the use of iOS devices. And just one of them is also downloading videos from YouTube in a few clicks.

How to download YouTube videos on iPhone

  1. Download the app Shortcuts, if you don't have it on your device
  2. Add directly on your iPhone or iPad this shortcut
  3. Choose Load Shortcut
  4. In the app Abbreviations go to section Library and check that you have the shortcut added Download Youtube
  5. Open it YouTube and search video lesson, which you want to download
  6. Choose under the video Sharing
  7. In the section Share the link select at the end More
  8. Choose Abbreviations (if you don't have the item here, click Next and add Shortcuts)
  9. Select from the menu Download YouTube
  10. Wait for the whole process to take place
  11. You can find the downloaded video in the application Files. Specifically, it is stored on iCloud Drive in the folder Shortcuts

Once you download the video at any time in the future, you don't need to add the shortcut again and just proceed from point 5. The process is very simple and, above all, fast. It is ideal for downloading videos for offline playback.

How to change video save location

You can also modify the shortcut in various ways and change, for example, the place to save the video. Just open the app Shortcuts and in the item Download YouTube choose three dots icon. At the very end, you will find a section that takes care of saving the video to iCloud Drive. You can change the service you are using to Dropbox.

If you want to save videos directly to the gallery between photos, then look for the item at the bottom of the field Save to photo album and you come her. Previous item Save the file you can delete so that the video is not saved in two places (iCloud Drive and in the gallery).

You can also adjust the output video quality. In editing the shortcut, a list of numbers (approximately in the middle) is used for this, the order of which you can change. Individual numbers then have the following meaning:

  • 22: mp4 720p
  • 18: mp4 360p
  • 34: flv 360p
  • 35: flv, 480p
